I use in’n’out and they do a major service and mot in about 2 hours. Their waiting rooms are clean and comfortable with free WiFi so I wait and get some work done while I’m there.

I highly recommend them

Yes I don't have luxury to choose living in a small area sadly I feel like kicking my car and crying had it 2 months now failed I can't afford to scrap it either the amount I paid

Oh bloody hell I get it.
I don't know anything about the thing yours has failed on but it's so unfair to have to have something go wrong especially in a newer car.

It's out of our control and very difficult when you're reliant in a rural area.
Have you had to leave it there are they doing the repairs?

Hopefully it doesn’t end up too expensive. Oil leaks generally have to be quite bad for it to fail though - have you noticed oil on the ground where you park it or having to top up frequently?

DH is taking ours in today, for full service, brake fluid change and MOT, he is dropping it there and getting the bus back home, it won’t be done till 1pm. So far too long to hang around the dealership.

Boredlass · 26/02/2025 08:11

I get them to pick up and drop off. Well worth the money

You say you bought the car just two months ago @ZippyCat. Was it a private sale or from a car dealer? It's just that most car dealers give you a warranty for three months or so. A major oil leak sounds like something that should have been picked up by a car dealer when inspecting the car for resale. I know it wouldn't help with regard to inconvenience, but perhaps it might be worth checking out. I just had the oil pump replaced on my 2016 car which only has 49,000 miles on it, so a bit of a shock as would expect to get about 100,000 from an oil pump apparently - and I'm £600 down😬

We have to take our cars to government run MOT centres in N Ireland. It's all fairly efficient (once you get an appointment) but I feel so anxious waiting. When I first learned to drive, you had to take your own car through and they would bark all these instructions at you LEFT INDICATOR! RIGHT INDICATOR! DIPPED LIGHTS! FULL BEAMS! I used to forget where everything was in my sheer panic. The number of times I sounded the horn by mistake🤣 Then you had to drive your car onto a very narrow ramp, where it was raised up on a mechanical lift and the bloke stood underneath the car shouting at you to wiggle the steering wheel etc. It was horrendous, but at least it passed the time! Now they just take the car and run it through for you. Takes about 15 minutes.

Oh my god, this sounds intense and I would absolutely forget how my car worked and I worry about this in the build up 😆

Mine is in for its service and mot today - it's such a nervous wait for the call 😩😩

Auburngal · 26/02/2025 09:10

I go to the garage around the corner from my home. No waiting room. Usually go to the gym after dropping car off. Then go home. A couple of times I had appointments and bus/walk/get parents to take me there depending on distance, weather etc

Tcateh · 27/02/2025 15:00

The 22 yr old car passed it's MOT 😳
1 bulb advisory and some corrosion on a small part to keep an eye on.

Weeks, I've worried.

Thank goodness for now.

I hate waiting during MOTs. I’m from Staffordshire, and it seems to me that this is the biggest problem with local garages, they work like they’re paid by the minute. But now I’ve started going to a new service that really focuses on speed and professionalism. MB Motors in my area has a comfortable waiting room and lets you know in advance how long the test will take, I barely even notice the time passing.

An MOT typically takes 45-60 minutes. If you book a waiting MOT then turn up at the allotted time you should be on your way about an hour later. This is not rocket science.
