How many days does milk from the farm shop last?

I've recently tried to make an effort to buy better produce after noticing the quality of the supermarket stuff going downhill. I was pleasantly surprised that some of the fruit and veg from my farm shop was the same price is the same price as the supermarket, for some reason I'd assumed it would be far more expensive.

I've bought the refillable glass milk bottles from there and really happy with them. Now I'm just wondering how many days you'd expect it to stay in date? I know you can always smell when it's gone off but would you say 3-4 days? Trying to plan whether I need to go once or twice a week to refill.

Hey, I love getting my milk from the farm shop, coffee is so much better! It does say 3 days once you start using your bottle. I pass 2 farm shops almost daily so it's not a chore to fill up. X

Is it raw or pasteurised?

Notnursery · 25/02/2025 13:47

@NippyNinjaCrab thank you I thought about 3 days, and yes it definitely tastes better!

@boulevardofbrokendreamss good question, I don't actually know but will check on that next time

I thought it was illegal to buy raw milk in the uk? Or maybe it just has to be labelled as not for human consumption?

Besides the point, we used to do 3 days then it usually ended up in panckaes or scones. However, pints of milk last a day in our house. I miss milk in glass bottles, we cant get in delivered anymore, but I never considered buying it from a farm shop, I'll look into that, thanks!

We get milk delivered to the doorstep from the local dairy twice a week. It's pasteurised and non homogenised so the cream floats on the top.
The milk we got delivered today goes out of date on 1st March. The use by date is stamped on the foil lid.

BridgetCleaver · 25/02/2025 14:39

Make sure it's pasteurised or the milk will last longer than you if you're unlucky. I see a lot of farm shops jumping on the "raw milk" bandwagon.

It’s illegal in Scotland, due to being implicated in a severe outbreak of salmonella poisoning in Aberdeenshire around 40 years ago. Not so in England, although it must be labelled with a health warning and obtained directly from farmers.

We still have milk from the milkman, it lasts for quite a few days.

TonTonMacoute · 25/02/2025 15:01

I get a delivery from a farm dairy once a week. The milk easily lasts the whole week.

Notnursery · 25/02/2025 15:03

I tried a milk delivery service but they were a bloody nightmare to be honest.

I wouldn't have thought it was raw milk, but will double check next time I'm there. There are couple of different ones near me, ones in an actual farm shop and one is in a shed at the edge of a farm. They sell it bottled in plastic bottles or you can use the vending machine with reusable glass milk bottles.

They also do flavoured milk which is absolutely delicious!

I reckon 1 week for the milk from my milk man which comes from local farms rather than a big chain

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/02/2025 15:08

I have bought raw milk in Scotland before in the last 30 years. The farm producing it have a special licence. However milk prices have been so low in recent years they have switched to cheese production.

StopGo · 25/02/2025 15:11

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee raw milk is perfectly legal in the UK. It has to be from tuberculosis and brucellosis tested herds and clearly labelled as 'raw'.

There is no special licence which would allow such a thing: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ssi/2006/3/schedule/6/made

Perhaps it was sold on the basis of being described as not for human consumption?

Notnursery · 25/02/2025 16:16

I just looked at the bottle and it actually says "unhomogenised, lightly pasteurised" on there. I was starting to worry!

I find it’s fine for a good 4 or 5 days at least, from the day milk is delivered from the farm up the road.
