Been called to court as a witness

Has anyone ever experienced this? It was a friend who was stabbed and a few of us have been called to provide evidence. What does it entail? I'm also incredibly shy and never spoken publicly and the thought makes me sick. I just worry I will mess it up!

Oh bless you OP.

It isn’t easy, but all you have to do is tell the truth and don’t get angry no matter how much the defence team try and irk you. It’s also not like the movies, you’ll likely be in a modern space that won’t feel like it’s public speaking. Also there will be A LOT of waiting around so take a book.

Just tell the truth and remember only to answer questions. That might sound obvious but sometimes the defence can try and trip you up so if you aren't sure ask them to repeat it. If it's not a question you can say 'sorry is that a question?' Remember to address the judge with your answers rather than the person asking. That makes it easier anyway.

When you give evidence you may be (almost certainly will be) cross-examined by the other party's barrister or solicitor. They will try to trip you up, get you confused and so on. Keep it simple, stick to your original statement and answer questions honestly. Try not to get stressed or reactive.

Part of my job meant going for training in how to give evidence in court.
Stay calm
Only answer the question asked, don't go off on a tangent.
Keep your answers brief and succinct.
Stand with your feet pointing towards the judge as this will help you direct your answers to them.

Although I really struggle to direct my answers to someone who isn't actually addressing me, no judge has ever taken offence. They do realise you will be nervous and you're there to help so won't want to make things worse for you.
