my grandma is currently in hospital, she's 90 and in declining health and she is being looked after beautifully by the ward nurses, she's not really "with it" but she keeps saying how lovely the nurses are and how well they are looking after her, and when I/we have gone to visit they are very hospitable to us and generally just great

any nurses on here able to suggest a nice way to show our appreciation??? i'm sure they get enough biscuits and tubs of sweets and whatnot I was wondering if there's anything in particular you would be happy to receive

im a home baker so a few tray bakes or something wouldn't be much of an effort at all but they're probably sick of cakes and stuff

As a HCP absolutely anything is appreciated but a nice card is always so lovely to receive. If she’s able to name specific nurses then they are able to use it for their appraisal

Have a look at the hospital's website and see if there is a central way to submit compliments and positive feedback. This gets reported further up the management chain and it's filtered down to the ward. Any nurse I know (and ward sister as well as any other notable therapist such as physio, OT etc) is delighted to be recognised this way.

agree with giving formal feedback that the nurses can use at appraisal time, does your hospital have a M&S , Starbucks, Costa? You could buy a gift card and they would be able to order some coffees / lunch for all the nurses with this.

When mum was in hospital, I sent in a carrier bag full of cans and bottles of soft drinks and water. The nurses said it was one of the best gifts...but it was in summer.

I was visiting a hospital recently, and PALS had a poster up inviting contact with any feedback. They specifically said, problems, or compliments for named staff.

’cheap crappy chocolate’ is much easier to shovel in when you get 2 mins to yourself mid shift! Every nurses station has the sweets/chocolate drawer for a reason 🤣 We get free fruit at our hospital.

I’d rather have the chocolate ta.

A gift card each for whatever shop or coffee shop is in the hospital? There was a small M&S in the hospital my mum was in, I thought that way they get some lunches or coffees paid for.

KnickerlessParsons · 24/02/2025 18:13

Can you make a donation to something in the hospital in the nurses' names?

SlaveToAGoldenRetriever · 24/02/2025 18:15

Black pens!

I'd suugest asking the nurses themselves, OP

When I was last in hospital, I also wanted to thank the kind nurses. They suggested lots of 'good' (not necessarily posh, but gentle to the skin) handwash and ditto handcream, because their hands got so dry , having to wash them so frequently, and because it's nice to use luxurious/good quality stuff rather than purely utilitarian, from time to time.
But seriously, just ask. What they'd like/appreciate now might be totally different. If you ask them, it shows that you really care.

so my mum took in a big box of naice biscuits (we'll do something else later on this was just a quick thing) she handed them to one of the nurses (that we hadn't actually seen before) saying "these are for the whole team" and then said nurse went and put them in her personal locker LOL

It's unfortunate that the first person to be an ass hole is the one to receive the team gift. Nice gesture though.
