Do you like going for a walk?

It's one of my favourite things.

I prefer it in the mountains or somewhere beautiful, a lovely spring day is best burning I cantbhave that I still love a walk in a local park or even to the shops! I'll walk in all weathers, but my least favourite is when it's very hot.

It makes me feel happy and relaxed.

For a long time I thought people who didn't do it just hadn't tried it/got into the routine, but is it possible there are healthy/fit people who don't enjoy it?

If so, why not?

I used to love being able to just walk around being able to appreciate being outside and just enjoying the fresh air.

Now I just find myself being envious of the fit & able people who can just get up & go.

We should never take for granted just being able to do the everyday things that we do.

Used to think I hated walking and it was just a way to get from A to B but I realised I actually do like walking just not round a council estate where my house happens to be. With the exception of foggy nights around Christmas when everybody has their lights up and the streets are cold and quiet and the frost shimmers on fallen foliage, and it feels like every breath is clean air.

I love walking somewhere for the sake of an adventure though. To see what I can see, and feel fulfilled afterwards.

The pandemic killed the joy stone dead for me. I thought it would recover, but no, I still associate it with the lockdowns. I do other forms of exercise that help me feel much more alive and happy. I walk my dogs daily in the forest near me and that’s always tranquil, and I enjoy it - but not any of the routes I did when we locked down.

blobby10 · 24/02/2025 16:01

Although I've never hated it and have had some lovely walks in the Malverns and up Snowdon, now I have a dog I do like it more. Preferably cold crisp weather, dry underfoot, or warm enough for shorts and T shirt but not too hot!

ladymammalade · 24/02/2025 16:04

I blooming love it. Have been in the Lake District all week and we've walked every day (admittedly only 3 miles yesterday when it rained).

At home I walk daily and have several friends I meet for walks and a good chat.

Oh how l miss it.
I used to walk everywhere.. loved country and costal walks. Going off beaten tracks.. visiting places of interest especially in The Dales and Lake district.. walking up Malham cove and to waterfalls.
All around Snowdonia.
Lovely parks and Gardens. Even walking from my house into the city .
Just not the same in a wheelchair ( tiny steps with walking aids). Yes I'm lucky I'm always driven places ( the coast this weekend) and we have hire car abroad.. and we drive through beautiful stunning scenery.. but I'd love to get closer and walk off beaten track.
Enjoy it while you can.👌

Would your disability mean you’re able to manage a tramper? (Like a big mobility scooter if you’re not aware of them). You only use your hands to operate them. They’re available in lots of lovely locations.

I’ve just joined Outdoor Mobility (£15 a year with the hire in most locations included with membership; a few have a small extra charge of around £2.50). I’m booked to go on my first outing later this week. I have used one on holiday in the Peak District too and it was amazing. I’m not in a wheelchair but cannot walk far so I do miss walking a lot.

A walk on the beach first thing in the morning or at dusk is one of lives great pleasures. If i go more than a couple of days without walking on the beach i go stir crazy. I loved walking in the lanes and woods of the home counties when i lived there but the beach wins.

SallyWD · 24/02/2025 16:11

It's one of my favourite things to do and it helps me so much in terms of physical and mental health. It also helps me to maintain my weight. I really notice a difference when I don't have a good walk. I feel more stressed, I don't sleep as well.
I walk to and from work each day (an hour each way) and I feel so good afterwards. Say I've had a slightly stressful day and then I walk home, I feel completely calm by the time I've reached home. Even though it's a long walk to work, I simply can't imagine driving to work. I'd be sitting down for 90% of the day.

Walk around central London at 6am on a Sunday... it's magical and silent.

Fiorenzsay · 24/02/2025 16:22

I love walking but I am terrified of dogs so I have to find places they aren't off leads or aren't allowed.

I like may to September on the beaches for this reason too.

CatsChin · 24/02/2025 16:23

Like others, I used to ADORE walking before I became disabled. Used to do the coast path with DH and we'd mark off the bits we'd done on a map.

Then I got long covid and for the last three years walking makes me feel sick and ill. I've just dragged myself outside to do ten minutes slow waddling around outside as it's so beautiful and sunny.

So please enjoy your walks on behalf of us ole' cripples who miss it! But I love seeing people smiling and enjoying themselves outside.

Onlygoneanddoneit · 24/02/2025 16:24

So sad to hear about all the people who would love it if it was possible/didn't cause pain ❤️

Hate it. I get bored.

dairydebris · 24/02/2025 16:26

Love a walk but my favorite bit is getting back home... ahhhh.....

I find walks very very dull. I’m fit and healthy, and will happily work out every day. But, I will do pretty much anything to avoid a 10 minute walk. I hate them.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 24/02/2025 16:29

Love it. It's an hour's round trip walking from my house to the nearest shop and I often favour the walk over the car. Ear buds in, audio book on tons of fresh air. What's not to love. People who say there's no point walking unless you have a dog... maybe try broadening your horizons a little!

Aww no, just make it see your walks as all the sweeter! I love seeing people enjoying outside and walking is the most natural and fabulous way to exercise IMO.

Nothatgingerpirate · 24/02/2025 16:33

Physically fit person here.
I don't find any purpose in a walk.

GOODCAT · 24/02/2025 16:34

Really enjoy it, great for mental and physical health. Been for a couple of coastal walks today and really blown the cobwebs away.

doodleygirl · 24/02/2025 16:37

Just got back from a long walk, through the woods and across the open fields, the sun is shining and I just feel so happy. I do however have to shower the dog as she is filthy.

valder · 24/02/2025 16:38

I do enjoy a walk, but the key for me is that it MUST have a purpose. So for instance walking in a wood or around a park or up and down a seafront would kill me with boredom. I compare it to exercise in a prison yard lol. 😊That's me!

So my walks are in my city, or my locality and either involve discovering parts of my (historic) city that the tourists see but natives rarely go, or the undiscovered bits and wander around with a stop for coffee and cake at the end. In my immediate area, I'm lucky enough to have a river walk that's about 10k but has intermittent branch offs, and a canal bank walk that goes on for 30k, same branches off. The next town over is at the end of the river walk so I mooch in the charity shops, and the canal has a little craft village about 5k in. On a lazy day I'll walk to the nearest shopping centre and back, bringing my backpack for purchases.

Good cushioned shoes, and an audiobook/podcast are my favourite companions as I nearly alway walk on my own.

Ponderingwindow · 24/02/2025 16:41

I’ve always hated walks. It’s slightly tolerable of it is cold and foggy, but the ground is not slick. When it is even the tiniest bit sunny I have to slather on sunblock and worry about how much time I am spending outside because I am so pale and so I might as well be a vampire.

Did you see my post about the trampers. I have ME so probably similar to you.

looams · 24/02/2025 16:43

I quite enjoy it when I do it, but it's rare as I normally have young children with me, and we spend most of our walking time going to and from places, not doing a walk for the sake of it. Sometimes I'll do a buggy walk while my youngest naps. I walked a lot when my dcs were under 2, it was the easiest way of getting to and from various baby & toddler classes and I hated the stress of not knowing if there would be space for the buggy on a bus.
