You can guarantee every day I go out this is said to me while I'm pushing my two little ones in the double buggy! Always by a certain generation, always said lighthearted and it does make me chuckle because literally everyone says it 😆
They're not wrong btw !

What else is guaranteed to be said to you while out with the little ones? I can't be the only one who gets the same line over and over !

I used to get 'what lovely curls' either to me our my daughter or both of us! I used to think it was nice, just a little interaction that punctuated the day.

sixtyandfabulousofcourse · 24/02/2025 09:42

My two daughters were 91/2 months apart due to early birth so they were in a double buggy for simplicity. I always got those comments too!
when I had my daughter and was expecting my 2nd all I heard was bet you hope its a boy you will have one of each! actually I did not care either boy or girl; when it was a girl I was not upset to be honest more intent on worrying about my daughter fighting for her life

UnctuousUnicorns · 24/02/2025 09:58

My older two have 16 months between them, so I heard those words or similar many times! Luckily they're now 25 and 24, and our youngest 15, so life isn't so hectic now! 🙂

I must admit i do say this sometimes but its meant in a nice way, like saying "you have your hands full of love"

Wotrewelookinat · 24/02/2025 10:02

I had that too...DD1 and DDtwins 1 year apart! Also, 'are they triplets?'.

DiscoBeat · 24/02/2025 10:02

My oldest has very long eye lashes and used to smile at older ladies when out and about. You could guarantee someone would say 'he's going to be a real heartbreaker when he grows up'. And yes he's a very handsome young man!

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 24/02/2025 10:08

I hope this sort of thing never dies out, it's such an easy way to strike up a conversation with a stranger. I'm sure every single parent has heard 'So peaceful, but not for long eh?', and 'She'll be up all night now I bet, you poor thing!' when you have a sleeping baby in a pram. I used to love it when it happened to me.

SeaToSki · 24/02/2025 10:39

I had 3 boys and then a girl…then number of times someone said something about keeping going until I got a girl…it did grind my gears a bit

but also, going out with the 4 and comments about having my hands full. That was nice and often lead to a nice chat about how busy it was, but busy with fun and love

mommyfinger · 24/02/2025 10:47

Yep I've had the are they twins. Just had it now getting in the bus !!
Oh yes I do love it, babies melt everyone's hearts don't they !
Another when they're newborn is "aw how old?"
😆

16 months between my two aswell!

"It's about survival".

No, it's spending time with my child and actually I enjoy it so I wish people would stop implying it's something arduous I need to "survive".

Oh I don't know, some days I'm very much surviving ! It's hard work having two so little and close together, but yes very rewarding and wouldn't change it for the world!

‘Yes can I tempt you with one or both for the day?’

Devon24 · 24/02/2025 11:19

It’s grating because you are so knackered but it is not meant unkindly - almost intended to be validating I imagine.

I would never say this kind of comment, and I usually either just smile and hold the door open, or say what gorgeous children you have. Never commenting negatively, because who needs that when you haven’t had a full nights sleep in years

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 24/02/2025 11:31

I've got twins. The comments / questions used to drive me bonkers. People just like having something to say.

Same. Motherhood can be a very lonely time, 99% of these comments are with nice intentions.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 24/02/2025 16:03

This banter was what got me through early parenthood. Ds 1 was a nightmare baby he is a teen now and I still get flashback moments to how awful it was. But he was beautiful, not just in my eyes but everyone else's. He was also very sociable and loved making eye contact and smiling. When I was feeling low I would go to a shopping centre and try to soak up the goodwill and try to count my blessings. Everyone said how good looking he was, people approached me to ask if they could look at him. Plus when he was smiling at someone it was a mental break for me. I always came home feeling happier and stronger.

'Double trouble' or 'two for the price of one' when I had twins. I enjoyed it mostly, you can see the comments coming, a woman over 50 especially if she is with a friend. They were so cute though. They used to hold hands in the forward facing buggy.

Marylou2 · 24/02/2025 16:11

Perhaps see it as an acknowledgement of your hard work. They see you and understand what you're going through. It won't be meant unkindly.

Marylou2 · 24/02/2025 16:13
