Does anyone else feel like they’re having a mental breakdown before their period?

And I don’t mean usual PMS. I used to feel a bit grumpy, irritated more than usual but at things that would usually be a little bit annoying..

but for the last maybe 12 months I feel like I’ve gone absolutely batshit crazy and this starts spot on 8-10 days before my period.

I get unreasonably irritated at tiny things, like my husband literally breathing too loud or yesterdays massive meltdown was because I woke up too late for my previous days planning to go the way I needed it too. I cried almost all day because nothing got done on the order I planned it too and I blamed DH for eating 4 slices of toast and ruining my day.

also my anxiety (I suffer anyway) goes through the roof and I’m finding I’m having week long panic attacks, as in all day everyday I feel completely on edge and total doom.

is it because I’m getting older? Has anyone else felt like this?

It's certainly got worse with age. I'm still having the occasional period at 55 and the days I feel utterly bleak and despairing for about 2 days beforehand. At some point i will cry, and i usually have suicidal.thoughts and get close to plans. It's been like that for a few years though it does seem to be easing again finally.

I'd talk to your GP, especially if you have one with an interest in women's health.

No

That sounds like an extreme response so speak to your doctor

There’s another condition similar to pms/pmt but with more severe symptoms and for longer but still definitely tied to hormones and period. I can’t remember what it’s called but maybe worth a google.

otherwise how old are you? Perimenopause kicking in? Speak to gp about hrt. It can help.

I’m 28, have two children and generally poor MH anyway; am seeing a therapist (or supposed to be.. 26 weeks and counting on the NHS list)

I’m certain it is hormonal and probably nothing to ‘worry’ about; but I am struggling to cope with it; a couple of time I’ve worried myself silly and got myself in a place where I’d think I’d rather be dead than feel so panicky.

GP didn’t really seem concerned; offered me the pill to try.. but I’ve not taken the pill since in 10 years after it didn’t agree with me back then. DH is sterile so I feel a bit bummed if I have to start remembering to take a pill every day at the same time again 😂

@Onceuponatimeinalandfaraway PMDD?

pickywatermelon · 24/02/2025 00:07

Yes, and I take the pill back to back no breaks under doc advice, which I realise isn’t a helpful solution if the pill doesn’t suit

Touty · 24/02/2025 00:07

Oh god yes.

peanutbuttertoasty · 24/02/2025 00:09

Yes

Be careful, sometimes the pill can make things much worse

This is what I’m worried about (of course.. 5 days from period) 😂 it didn’t agree with the me when I was a teen. I was miserable, appetite was poor (maybe that was just being a teen though?) and I had migraines on it. But im not really sure what the alternative could be?

PMDD fits the bill, GP didn’t confirm though, just shrugged and said to try the pill as it’s most likely hormonal.

if you are progesterone intolerant I’d be wary of the pill.
