Boring question regarding paying in a cheque...

Hi all,

Wondered if anyone can help.

Basically my bank accounts are in my married surname. I divorced 10 years ago but never changed them, just didn't get around to it and it never really mattered.

Anyway, I've received a cheque in my maiden name (that I always use, on my passport etc).

Any idea how I can pay this cheque in? The back nks wouldn't deposit it online due to the name. I could change my name with the back but need to go to a branch (miles away) and I can't work out what ID i would need.

The cheque was compensation from a car accident. I've emailed to explain the situation but nobody ever replies, so I don't hold out much hope.
Would I be able to pay in via post office?

Thanks in advance.

Check with a specific bank you want to use but I don't see how you can pay a cheque made out in one name to an account in a different one

It needs to go into an account that matches the name on the cheque. Use your passport as ID to change the name on your bank account

Would it be easier to open a new account in your maiden name - maybe one you can open online? Then you can pay in the cheque and transfer it to your normal account.

I have done that with the Halifax. They allowed me to do it because I had the account originally in my maiden name, then changed the account to my married name. So they had traceability of the two names on the one account via the name change.

edit to add. Had to pay in at the bank in person. Didn’t have to take any further ID. Ring your bank and ask?!

Ahh thank you for this, I'll contact NatWest and see if this is an option.

Thanks all

I had this once with Nationwide. They wouldn't take it at the desk despite my account previously being in my maiden name, but the guy told me to go pay it in at the machine instead as they don't actually check anything under I think £100 or £1000. It worked!

I had the same issue with NatWest. I had a cheque addressed to my maiden name when my account is in my married name. I went to a branch with the cheque and proof of name change (deed poll and marriage certificate) and they processed it.

You can change your name with NatWest on the app/online as long as you have your divorce certificate and birth certificate (I presume, I changed mine online when I got married with just my marriage certificate)

I have no idea where my divorce certificate is 🙈 but should be able to locate my birthday certificate!
