Anyone know Peterborough?

An elderly relative is looking to relocate to Peterborough and I'm helping with the property search.

Does anyone who knows the area have any ideas about which parts to check or avoid?

Any advice about living there?

Werrington and Longthorpe are considered ok from my memory. A lot of Peterborough is a sprawling housing estate. Where are they moving from?

@AbitSceptical Please DM me - I can give lots of information. Peterborough can be a lovely place to live :-)

I would agree with the poster above. There are some really lovely areas around Peterborough, but I probably wouldn't aim for right in the centre.

Do you know why she is relocating? Obviously she'll need to be close to facilities. I don't know Peterborough that well so can't help but it's good that other pps can

I have lived in Peterborough for 40 years. Happy to share thoughts if you explain a little more as to what you are looking for. I live on Orton Longueville area.

Bretton and Marholm are very nice 😊

Thanks all. It's my Dad - he's moving from Stockton on Tees area. We are desperate to get him nearer me and my brother (south east) but he wants to be able to get back up north easily and Peterborough has the train links north and south. His budget isn't massive - £175K but it's just him and there do seem to be plenty of properties on rightmove.

Physically he's in good shape for his age, he can look after himself, drive etc. But as he gets older he might need more care.

Before I start calling estate agents I'd like to get a sense of whether the properties I'm seeing online are in reasonably safe areas.

I've heard Hampton is nice.

Lobster12345 · 24/02/2025 07:10

With the caveat that there is always different views on this, the areas I would avoid are Orton Malbourne, the city centre, Woodston and Welland.

LostMyLanyard · 24/02/2025 07:22

I live 20 minutes outside Peterborough. I'd avoid the centre, but Werrington is ok. A little further out but still close, you have The Deepings (all lovely) Bourne (fab) and Spalding (some parts ok, very cosmopolitan).

There are many lovely south Lincolnshire villages all within 10-30 minutes outside Peterborough. Happy to give feedback on these if/once your relative picks an actual location.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 24/02/2025 07:33

Is he happy with a 1/2 bed flat? Because he could look at St Neots which is on the train route to London.

SirDanielBrackley · 24/02/2025 08:21

SIL is in Bretton which seems nice from what I have seen of it.

AbitSceptical · 24/02/2025 22:07

Thank you so much for all these recommendations. I'll sit down with a map and work it out. Station access is important - so probably the little villages won't be quite right for him. 1/2 bed flat is fine, as long as he has office space because he still works from home part time.

I really appreciate everyone who has given a view. I need to tally the votes!
