Fruit and veg going off quickly

CatteryCatss · 23/02/2025 13:00

I’ll buy fresh fruit and veg and it’ll go off within three days.

I eat berries with my breakfast every morning, but I had to throw a lot away today because they were brown.

Am I going crazy? Is there a better way to store fruit and veg to make them last longer, rather than just in the fridge?

I wouldn't expect fresh picked berries to last more than a few days so would run from those treated to last longer

Lots of stuff is out of season here - so it's all having to come long distances ( and Brexit check may also add transport delay)

At this time of year tinned and frozen is best

Iv always found this with aldi’s fruit and veg.

I use long life bags and some kitchen roll laid under fruits, brocolli, mushrooms to avoid sweating. I wrap carrots in kitchen roll and they last weeks in my fridge.

You have unrealistic expectations.
Have you never been strawberry picking? The strawberries deteriorate very quickly after being picked and need eating up by the next day.
Why do people assume shop bought fruit and veg should last for days/ weeks after being picked?
I work in a supermarket and l can't believe how naive some people are, buy it frozen or canned if you want it to last.

I keep lots of frozen berries in and find them so useful for adding to breakfasts, but also puddings like crumbles. I like frozen blackberries best, or blueberries. I don't think softer berries like strawberries freeze as successfully.

Have you tried frozen berries? Raspberries and strawberries are a bit rubbish frozen but blackberries and blueberries are good. Also much cheaper and less waste.
Farmfoods ( I go there for fruit and seafood) have 3 x 450g bags of frozen fruit (choice of Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cherries, apple, rhubarb) for £7

I think fresh berries should be consumed in a day or two, as all are imported at this time of year.
In the summer, when berries are less expensive, plentiful and fresh, you could 'flash freeze' them on a tray and store in freezer in a freezer bag for later use.

When I buy fresh ( imported at this time of year) Broccoli and Cauli, if it isn't sold in a tight-fitting wrap of plastic, I use what I need and then store any left over in the fridge, after wrapping it tightly in cling film; it seems to keep for quite a long time that way.
All root veg I keep in plastic, which has been opened a bit for ventilation, in the fridge too.
Potatoes and bulk onions kept in the dark, in a cool room, not in the fridge.

Or just stick to frozen fruit and veg out of season.

We keep our fridge very cool, and I find this helps to keep fruit and veg longer. Things like berries I wouldn't buy this time of year though, unless I was eating them that day. They have to be imported and can take days to reach the supermarket shelves, so definitely won't keep as long.

TeaRoseTallulah · 23/02/2025 14:23

They don't last long, buy frozen ones?

Same here. I won't buy fruit and veg from there unless I am going to eat it immediately.
