Just so much more is expected from girls

Yes girls mature both physically and emotionally earlier than boys. Anyone in doubt should observe a birthday party for 11 year olds. The girls will be taller than the boys apart from a few exceptions, most look physically pubescent and they behave like teenagers. The boys still look like little boys in their face and body and behave accordingly.

This doesn't really even out until late teens.

It's something that's said to justify the expectation that girls are responsible for boys' behaviour. And it stinks.

Yes. DS1 definitely needs a gap year before Uni. And DS2 will as well. They just need more runway. We may end up directing them towards foundation years to provide it. An expensive extra year but much needed.
