Really bad chickenpox - 9 month old advice please?

Hi

My 3.5 year old had chicken pox from nursery 1.5 weeks ago and unfortunately has passed it on to my 9 month old.

He's got it really bad and I'm struggling to help him the poor thing. He's having baths with childs farm oat milk, oat moisturiser and calpol to keep his temperature which is really important for him as he's epileptic.

Because of his age and epilepsy he can't really take any medication for it as they all say unsuitable for people with seizures and he's too young.

He's currently having maybe half his milk intake and eating plain Greek yogurt I think it soothes his throat.

Does anyone know of other remedies that may help him? I feel so lost trying to help him 😞

Oh sorry just seen you are at the hospital. So glad- I didn’t want to alarm you.

Anonymouskitty · 23/02/2025 13:19

They're sending us home with an anti histamine that will work with his anti seizure medication. I will continue to bath him in oats and my husband got the poxclin as well.

Fingers crossed he'll come through. He's had 6 oz milk so that's something x

Calamine lotion on cotton pads, dabbed onto the sores

Put bicarbonate of soda in his bath water. It’s magical for stopping itching.

How horrible
If you want a silver lining at least they have had it together so you won’t have to go through this again.

Mischance · 23/02/2025 13:53

Glad that you now have the night medication that suits his needs - fingers crossed that he will start to feel more comfortable soon.

When my DD had it at 4 she had spots round her anus which gave her hell.

Bless her. My toddler had the same and all around his genitals so he was bad also. Such a horrible thing for them x

I was told (similar circumstances) that if they have chicken pox as a baby they don't necessarily get the immunity 😩 saying that my younger one never caught it again

Oh goodness me, I've just seen this post. My dc burn had cp at the same ages. My baby was just one big scab! I have no different advice to what b has already been said, but I wish your baby bit a speedy recovery.

My dc are teens now, and neither has had cp again. They both got bronchitis shortly after cp, which I'm told is not unusual. Good luck

Having chickenpox under 1 year can put them at higher risk of childhood shingles. My ds had CP around 6 months and shingles age 3

ParmaVioletts · 23/02/2025 18:42

Op so glad he's been seen,, my son had it age 9 months few spots but deep and nasty. One got infected

NotDarkGothicMama · 23/02/2025 18:43

Poor little chap. I hope the antihistamines and poxclin help. The Superdrug website says to put a few spoonfuls of bicarb in the bath, so the amount isn't an exact science.

You need proper oats, not bubble baths with oats in. A massive sock full in the bath. Also Poxcilin is your friend.

Nat6999 · 23/02/2025 23:12

Buy calamine & Witch Hazel cream from Amazon, it doesn't dry as quick as plain calamine lotion & the Witch Hazel has a cooling effect to help the itching. If he is more comfortable in the bath, have extended play sessions in the water, loads of bath toys to keep him occupied. If clothes are irritating him, let him play in just a nappy, cover him with a brushed cotton sheet next to his skin in his cot, adjust your room temperature accordingly.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 23/02/2025 23:56

aqueous calamine cream is good, and not drying.

Anonymouskitty · 24/02/2025 13:17

Thanks all, the medication, calpol and poxcilin seem to be helping. He's got a few more around his eyes this morning but I think hoping that's it as the rest are starting to scab.

He's had 2 bottles of milk today so far and he only woke up a few times last night so did get a much better sleep. Hopefully we're coming through the worst of it

Horrible to see them like that isn't it. I hadn't realised how awful CP can be until mine had it. One of them was absolutely covered, the other had about three spots.

spiderlight · 24/02/2025 23:11

Glad he's on the mend. He's beautiful.

RamsestheDamned · 25/02/2025 00:21

Didn’t read the whole thread but wanted to say what I tell everyone I know who has a child with chicken pox. No ibuprofen (I'm sure you already know that). Poxclin mousse calmed my hysterical daughter down in seconds with sheer relief. Virasoothe gel to dot on everywhere to prevent scars.
Hope you're both okay Flowers

How is he today @Anonymouskitty ?

When they get it from siblings it is worsened by each transmission. My dd got it from her brother and ended up being hospitalized with sepsis when she was 3. I was not at all neglectful - it was so fast. I would try to see the doctor again tomorrow, going on my experience.

I think this is true. Dd had it at 6 months and looked very similar. She had 2 x exposure as her older brother and sister both had it. She was in a bad state.

Much better thank you. He's back on some solids and playing with toys again and starting to scab over :) xx
