Plug in hybrid are they worth it

So have decided to buy a VW golf. I want to keep a long time. My last vehicle had for ten years. I only drive about 4000 miles a year max and mainly shorter trips. Now I’m worrying I should buy a hybrid plug in golf not a petrol golf. They are a bit more expensive though and would need to get a 1k charger. Is it worth it for long term if the government keeps on their current zero emission agenda to future proof. I’m worried about potential complicated service and driving in snow and flooded roads etc.

Personally now I've driven electric I'd hate to go back to petrol. But I wouldn't bother with a hybrid as it's two different systems to go wrong. You drive such a small number of miles a year to be honest you'd be better off economically using a taxi for every trip instead.

I would
like to go ev. I may have to move for work though so that is why I’m a bit unsure.
i need a car for school run and back to work in time kids activities mainly so no couldn’t use taxis!

OP just to dispel some rumours or misinformation.

Driving in snow has nothing to do with an ev in terms of grip or handling.

Servicing costs are less as there isn’t an engine per se.

Flooded roads - if you drive in water below where your car hits the bottom of your car you engine will flood in a petrol car and be a write off. So either way don’t drive in water.

Some companies offer a charger as part of a lease scheme so look into that.

If you are driving short distances often then an ev can be very economical. No oil changes, no engine issues etc.

I think it would be a good idea for you to go into the dealership and talk to the experts.

My nail tech had a hybrid golf. It got a fuel leak and caught fire. Apparently this is not an entirely uncommon fault with these cars - this is what she said. Might be worth looking into.

The dealership told me not to get a ev and plug in hybrids were a fad. A lot of vw are petrol so I don’t think they will be much help!

was wondering how many private owners have a ev. It seems unfair that private business and company car owners get all the tax breaks! Us poor paye employees don’t get such tax incentives

Just to add another perspective- I bought a plug in hybrid, it was a show room model and I got a huge discount. Absolutely loved it- but my job entails making a lot of short journeys through the week. It was perfect for that. Loved the convenience of never having to fuel up with the reassurance that the fuel was there for longer trips. The battery did die once in four years but only cost about 300 to replace. Full EV batteries much more expensive. Definitely saved £s but my company also pays full travel expenses for hybrids, and there’s the fact I got about 10000 off for buying the showroom version.
