Best way to block access to time wasting sites

Can anyone share any tips/apps that will help me kick the habit of wasting time on a particular website?

Ideally I’d like to put one particular site behind a code and then hand my phone to my DH to enter the code. I find that anything I set up myself I just undo myself, even if it takes multiple steps to unlock it.

I literally want this for mumsnet, i waste so much time on it 😂

Back in 2009 there used to be something you could do coding wise and a Mumsnetter helped me do it so I could get on with my studies.

However it was easily overridden. It comes down to personal resolve in the end.

I have one called distractify (I think! I'll look up the proper name when back at my desk). It works well on chrome on a desktop. Not sure on phones

I had a dumbphone for 12 months. You can access WhatsApp on laptop. But here I am procrastinating and Mumsnetting...

i could not possibly name the site I need to be distracted from 😂

Dumb phone def not an option, need to use phone and internet for all sorts of things. Just need to wean my sled off one particular time-sapper.

I tried the Freedom app for a while but it was a bit erratic.

Hold on- lightbulb moment! Is it possible to set parental controls to block one specific website? In which case I just need to let DH set parental control on my phone? (iPhone 13)

(Our DS is too young for a phone but we do set screen time on his iPad and block things like you tube at certain times)

I think that would work OP.

@parietal it's not distractify, I googled that, it appears to be a celeb news site.

But I also googled block websites, and found the StayFocusd browser extension, which looks promising, including 'the nuclear option', which is a ' powerful feature that allows you to block access to websites for the number of hours you specify on the days you choose. Once activated, it cannot be canceled ensuring you remain focused and productive'.

I use leech block - it lets you block sites for a certain time (as in after 5 minutes of visiting them) and to block certain times (as in from 9 to 12, etc.). It is an extension for your browser.

Can you set up Google parental controls from your dh's phone then he can block certain sites for you? I'm considering doing this from my dh's phone.

Yes I think this may be the way forward! Didn’t know it was a Google thing though, will investigate.

Yes stayfocused is the one. You can set it to only be active in your work hours so you can still browse in the evening.

WhatapityWapiti · 24/02/2025 00:41

Update. Apparently Apple won’t allow one adult to control the screen time of another. You can only set parental controls for a child. It’s probably to prevent coercive control and modern slavery!

The Google thing inks only for Android. Back to the drawing board, will look at apps.
