Speeding ticket, but I wasn’t where they say I was

Hi everyone, I’ve just received a notice of intended prosecution for speeding, but I’ve looked at the time, date and location and I wasn’t there. I wasn’t even on the same road, for example, the stated road was the A222 but I drove on the road B222 and was a good seven minute drive from the roundabout where it changes from B222 to A222.

on top of that, the time of the incident is listed as 11.10, but I was sitting on the drive of a client, sending an invoice at 11.09 (I can see when I sent it from the app I use.) I wouldn’t have even been on the main B222 road by 11.10.

I’m a bit concerned that either it’s a scam (it looks very official) or I’m going to have to pay for something I didn’t do. Has anyone else experienced this?

Did they include a photo or other evidence of the time and place or a means to request it?

TickingAlongNicely · 22/02/2025 11:47

Is there a photo?

DancingHippos · 22/02/2025 11:47

Is there a link which shows photographic evidence?
Who sent the fine?
I would heavily dispute this.

It's possible that your number plate has been cloned. It happened to me quite a few years ago I can't remember exactly how I handled it but there was on the letter a method of contacting the police to challenge it

femininomenon · 22/02/2025 11:50

There should be details of how to appeal / get further info on the letter. In my area they don't include the picture as standard but once you dispute it they will provide it.

Wherearemymarbles · 22/02/2025 11:50

could be cloned number plate.
Contest it and say you can provide proof it could not have been you.

We're you on the A222 at any point that day? It might be that the clock on the camera was wrong. Which of course means you can challenge the fine, but might not mean that you weren't speeding.

ETA sorry, didn't mean to quote the OP. I never do that, so not sure how that happened!

IRememberWhenThisWasAllFieldsAndCakePunching · 22/02/2025 11:53

No, I was never on the A222, I hit the B222, completed the job, then retraced my steps back the way I came.

Definitely ask for proof.
I deal with a lot of clones in my job.

IRememberWhenThisWasAllFieldsAndCakePunching · 22/02/2025 11:57

It would seem like such a coincidence if it was a cloned number plate and it was literally ten minutes down the road. I don’t have a dash cam or anything like that, I’ve only got my work diary and the time stamps of when I sent messages and memories of where I was when I sent them.

It could easily be a mistake. I once had a ticket for supposedly jumping a red light in my mini. The vehicle in the picture was a transit van! When I zoomed in very closely you could see that a U had been mistaken for an O on the registration.

Pedallleur · 22/02/2025 11:59

Usually photo is on the letter. Has been when I have got caught. Also the notice comes from the police force in the area the camera was eg W.Yorks.

custardpyjamas · 22/02/2025 12:02

You often have to request the photo if you want to dispute it.

IRememberWhenThisWasAllFieldsAndCakePunching · 22/02/2025 12:04

Sorry, a load of posts hadn’t loaded when I replied! No there’s no photo, it doesn’t mention about appeal, just a space to say if I wasn’t the driver. It is from a police station maybe three counties away from where I live and four counties from where the incident is said to have taken place.

OP posts:
IRememberWhenThisWasAllFieldsAndCakePunching · 22/02/2025 12:11

I’m so confused as well, it’s not even got an amount to pay on it. It says I’ve been given notice that it is intended to take proceedings against the driver of motor vehicle <lists mine> for the alleged offence of exceeding the speed limit.

I have to complete a form either online or on the included paper form confirming I was the driver (or disputing that) and give all my details, and that’s it.

OP check who the sender is. Not the sender name but the actual email address that was used to send the email.

CurlewKate · 22/02/2025 12:12

The comedian Josh Widdecombe recently had his number plate cloned. It took him ages to get it sorted, but he managed in the end. Worth checking....

Chonk · 22/02/2025 12:14

The more info you give, the more it sounds like a scam. Can you ring the police station/force that it's from to enquire?

Bjorkdidit · 22/02/2025 12:16

Not a coincidence at all. Cloning starts when someone local looks for a car like their's in a public car park and then fits a copy of your number plate to their car.

They are then free to break as many motoring laws as they like knowing you will have to deal with the fall out.

IRememberWhenThisWasAllFieldsAndCakePunching · 22/02/2025 12:21

It wasn’t an email I got, it’s a paper letter through the post.

I’ve emailed them requesting evidence, online it says there’s not a number to call as they only respond to letters or emails, but the letter has a phone number to call Monday-Friday so hopefully that’s legit and I can call on Monday!

Normally there is more information you can access online like the photos. If not you can contact them and ask for a photo to confirm the driver. Don't say as evidence or it's harder to get a photo. If you can't get any more info I'd mark that you cannot identify the driver and put covering information in saying that noone with access to the car was there. But you should be able to get a photo. Have you tried googling the local camera partnership for the area to make sure it's the right contact details. You could also contact 101 and report that you are concerned your car has been cloned due to this

Duffybearblue · 22/02/2025 12:30

This happened to my friend a couple of years ago. Same car and colour, and just a couple of miles from where he lives but he knew it wasn't him, so he went to the police station, explained everything, the police went out to look at his car and realised he had parking sensors, and the car in the photo didn't. They believed him, said that it must be a cloned number plate, and they cancelled the speeding ticket.
I would suggest going to your local police station with the proof that it couldn't have been you, hopefully they will be helpful.

ThePinkPowerRangers · 22/02/2025 12:34

My DM got one and it was a scam.

TickingAlongNicely · 22/02/2025 12:39

Don't use contact details on the letter, find the number for the police force online and use that.

If its a scam it will just go to the scamners.

Puppupandaway · 22/02/2025 13:05

I'd take the letter to your local police station and ask them if it is genuine. Then ask them how you query it, as it does sound like your number plate may have been cloned.
