Does using a home box hair dye mean I can't get a hair dye in the hairdresser?

Just as the title says
I love my hairdresser and she does a great job but it's too expensive to keep getting my hair dyed there and the greys are showing more quickly. A root touch up costs almost the same as a full hair dye.
So if I use a box dye does that mean I'm stuck with boxes forever?

No - you're fine. A good hairdresser will mix to match your colour as much as necessary, and they certainly deal with this a lot.

Can you ask her what she uses and see if you can get the same for a root touch up?

I use root touch up between appointments for highlights and it’s never been a problem with the hairdresser (beyond an audible sigh).

No reason you can't do box dye and salon.
I believe its henna that is the issue and shouldn't be used with commercial dye.

no reason why you can’t do both- I get my hair dyed at the hairdresser every 6 weeks and I’ve got to the point where I use a root touch up after about 3-4 weeks as I just hate seeing the greys!

SharpWriter · 22/02/2025 10:15

I've been wondering this too. Greys come through after a couple of weeks and it's so much hassle and expense to constantly go to the hairdressers.

Couldn’t you go to Sallys and buy the same thing she uses? A bottle of developer and some tubes of colour would end up cheaper than the boxes in the long run and be better

You can do this but you’ll need to let them know where the colour goes to when you next go so they can get their mix right

Ok thanks everyone. Box dye it is!

Hi, I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. Do you mean "I've dyed my roots as far as here" kind of thing?

Yeah just sort of where you think the natural colour starts. It’s normally obvious with the grey roots but if your grey is more bits here and there you might need to just point out how far down you think it starts.

I think it’s pretty common these days. I do it would Clairol root touch up. I bought a cheap hair dye brush on Amazon to use instead of the ones that some with it as I find them so stiff. It’s super easy to do though!

I use Clairol root touch up along my parting and temples between salon visits. My hairdresser has never been anything other than complimentary tbh.

Also, it doesn’t nuke your whole hair, just the visible bits.
