Would you move from Edinburgh to West Sussex?

Tired of the weather, finding city life exhausting and demoralising. What are the pros and cons? Jobs and schools not a consideration, we are thinking of moving for family reasons.

Chichester to London it’s only about an hour on the train to London.

It’s about 1 hr 35 minutes into London Victoria. Petersfield or Haslemere would be around a 1 hr journey into London though.

I grew up in West Sussex and it does have lovely countryside around the South Downs. Places like Arundel are nice for a small town feel but right on the country. Lovely around Midhurst, Petworth as well. Horsham is a MUCH nicer town than Worthing which honestly is a total dump. Horsham has nice villages around it like Wisborough Green and it’s close to Gatwick as well (but not too close!). Chichester and the country around Goodwood is really beautiful as well. That side of W Sx is nicer/prettier than the east side.

For things to do, there is a great theatre in Chichester, plus a heap of National Trust places, country walks, you can go boating all over the place, Brighton is very vibrant, loads of country pubs, nice restaurants dotted about, castles etc. It certainly isn’t as buzzing as Edinburgh but from Chichester to London it’s only about an hour on the train to London.

It’s also very nice around that end of Surrey (Godalming, Hascombe, Bramley) although it’s more expensive but Guildford is a town with more going on.

If you want south but less traffic I think the Wiltshire area is quieter and you also have nice countryside.

We lived in Godalming years ago and I liked Guildford a lot.

I know it's an oldish post but I moved from Glasgow to Hampshire and loved . Fab weather, bands, theatre, countryside and handy for Chichester, London, Brighton and Dorset, if you fancy a weekend there. I don't miss Glasgow- it's not the same as it once was sadly.

I’d love to know where in Hampshire.

I would move to the south coast over Scotland any day. Scotland has its charm and Edinburgh is a fab city to visit but the weather would just get to me. I live in south west England and the winters are enough for me here. I just don’t think I could cope with Scottish winters.

Are you familiar with Perth? Moving up soon. Been to-ing and fro-ing for a year or so now. The last several visits have been too blinking hot (as was last summer). Love proper seasons, snow in winter, etc.

Barring the flood at south inch last year when apparently someone forgot to close the flood barriers (!), the south east and south west of England are at increased risk of flooding every year and it’s only likely to get worse, sadly.

I can comment well having lived all over London and Brighton too. Can confirm Worthing is a great place if you want:
-A lovely quiet beach
-Beautiful countryside and walking nearby
-Friendly safe community, quite diverse and queer friendly
Very good cafes restaurants pubs and bars (both traditional and also natural wines bars and small plates etc, craft breweries for Brighton vibes)
-Good schools
-Leafy parks
-Decent town centre with walkable shops
Three train stations(!) and an easy enough commute straight to Victoria/East Croydon/Clapham, and Brighton of course
-Decent parking (especially compared to Brighton)
And affordable homes! I bought my three bedroom house in a good area for only 30k more than my one bedroom flat in Brighton- and for the price of a one bedroom flat in Zone 3 London.
For us it's been a no brainer and we love it, we're in our 30s and lots of our friends are following suit.
-Best areas: Check it out in person. Personally we're near the station on a leafy nice street, Tarring (West) is also desirable. But the best way to ascertain is to go and walk around.
