How do you listen to music?

I literally just type songs into YouTube or switch on the radio at home. But if I'm on a plane or in the car, it's no good so I don't bother.

I'm literally a dinosaur and would still use a walkman if I had my tapes. I don't know anything about Spotify etc or iTunes if that's still a thing.

How do you listen to music whilst out and about... and how much does it cost?!

Mostly Spotify.
Occasionally if I'm having a party ill dig my old lap top and put an old iTunes list on

Nosebooper · 22/02/2025 00:03

At home I use Spotify, I pay £11.99 I think for a premium account. You can have a few account but you'll have to listen to ads every three songs or so and it has a tendency to not continue playing the artist you chose but something they think is similar 🤔 In the car I listen to the radio or CDs. My car is old and I can only connect to my phone via an aux cable, the music is then very quiet and I also don't have much data for streaming so don't bother.

There's also Amazon music and Apple music, I imagine they all cost about the same.

TheChosenTwo · 22/02/2025 00:06

Spotify every day. For music but more often than not these days, podcasts.
No idea how much it costs, dh pays for the family package (which is ironic as he’s the only one who doesn’t really listen to it 😂).
The other 4 of us do though, daily.
I listen when I go for walks on my own (headphones) or when I’m working or driving.

We have spotify family, I hardly use it TBH but the rest of the family use it a lot so it's worth it. I mainly listen to audio books and podcasts. In the car it's either radio or hook up my phone via bluetooth, otherwise earbuds or occasionally use a bluetooth speaker

Garlicheese · 22/02/2025 00:10

Spotify on my phone, I went briefly through a stage of using my old iPod that I expanded the storage of and put on rockbox but it’s a total faff compared to Spotify, just the ease of having all the music and playlists are much easier to put together than on an mp3 player.

I'm the same OP. Listen to the radio in the car, Radio 1 on the TV or via the computer. I pay for prime, and apparently I can get music via that, but have no idea how?
Never used a steaming service. I'm in my 40's 😕

BurntOrangeAutumn · 22/02/2025 00:43

Soundcloud. It's a free app.

Moonlightstars · 22/02/2025 00:56

Spotify family
Probably use it around 10 hours a day of not more between 6 of us.

mathanxiety · 22/02/2025 04:11

Spotify and radio (both via Echo) and vinyl at home, CDs and car radio in my car.

OverthinkingOlive · 22/02/2025 09:07

Thank you everyone 💓

@JC03745 download Amazon music to your phone. Also your computer if you want. Search for any track or song and click play. It really is as easy as that.
You can build playlists.
Most cars have a media button you can play your phone through.
In the house you can connect your phone via Bluetooth to a smart TV or speaker. If you don't have one you can buy a smart speaker very cheaply. You can also connect your phone to Bluetooth headphones or earphones or by wire to wired headphones.

JC03745 · 22/02/2025 12:01

@Boope Thank you, I do have a smart speaker and ear buds I use in the house. I will try downloading amazon music and connecting that.

My car is so old, it has a cassette slot in it, not even a CD slot and certainly no media button 😆

BeaAndBen · 22/02/2025 12:11

I hate it. I wish I’d put up more of an argument when DP got rid of our CDs. I miss browsing the shelves for inspiration when I want to listen to something.

I can’t remember 300 album titles. So what I ask Alexa to play is from a much reduced list of songs that spring to mind.

tinydynamine · 22/02/2025 12:11

The free version of Spotify plus YouTube forcrare versions, niche remixes etc. Sold all of my cds and vinyls years ago, sometimes regret doing so.

luckylavender · 22/02/2025 12:13

If I'm in the car, radio. If I'm at home CDs.

jazzyrockyblues · 22/02/2025 12:14

Spotify if I’m out and about or listening on a speaker, but if I’m listening to music in the house I usually listen to it on the record player

dontforgetme · 22/02/2025 12:18

Spotify when out and about, Alexa when I'm at home.

BertieBotts · 22/02/2025 12:21

Spotify free, but rarely listen out and about at the moment. If I did, then I would probably get the paid version so I could download music and not be stuck on shuffle. I don't mind adverts. Don't love them but it's basically like having a radio station with all the music I like on it.

Thankfully the PC version lets you listen to stuff without forcing shuffle. I like my big playlists shuffled, but I like to listen to albums in order.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/02/2025 12:28

BBC6 Music all day at home - the radio goes on in the kitchen first thing and off at bedtime. We leave it on for the cat if no- one’s home.

Out and about we have Apple Music. DP got me AirPods for Christmas a few years back and they are my favourite ever gift.

SunsetCocktails · 22/02/2025 12:34

We pay for Spotify premium for the whole family. Although my teens think it's 1995 again and are out at HMV every week buying CDs 😆

henlake7 · 22/02/2025 12:46

Spotify, for free (with a shit ton of adverts!).

I only really listen to it when Im running or out getting my steps in. I prefer the Sound of Silence at home.😁

weegiemum · 22/02/2025 13:48

Spotify premium- 5 of us use it and it's great, especially making up what I still call a "mix tape" just to see my 20-something dc roll their eyes at me!

We have a Bluetooth speaker in the kitchen and another in the lounge and I just connect to them. Good quality sound!

lucysmam · 22/02/2025 20:35

So late to the party - I clicked earlier then got distracted!

Spotify duo here til dd1 goes to uni, then probably just for me. Dd2's not as fussed but I do like to discover tiny artists on there.

Dd1 still buys an unholy number of CD's she never listens to because...streaming...but 🤷‍♀️
