Strong backpack for college with good lower back support

Okay, I started a thread in both Style and Beauty and Great Outdoors but responses were thin on the ground and didn't answer my question.

I am helping dd look for a sturdy backpack, around 44cm×28cm×15cmish that she can carry on both shoulders and that has a waist strap for when it she carries her textbooks and folders to and from sixth form.

Most backpacks design for school don't have one, as I guess it's not fashionable and most children don't usually carry it on both shoulders.

I have an excellent North Face Jester one that would be perfect for this purpose, but the newer models don't have a waist strap.

What bag do you or your older child use for week/commute that can withstand heavy load? We will take a trip to Cotswold or some place like this week, but I'm after recommendations please!

TLDR: Please help me find a backpack with a waist strap for heavy books.

Marathon Backpacks last years and are specifically designed for this ChiroPak - The School Bag Company. If your DD is anything like mine, however, she won't wear the waist strap! (I'd have a very hard time getting her to use this kind of backpack in general). But if she has back issues then that's a good one to go for, or the company do multiple other sizes/ designs.

Look at Deuter, they often have comfy ones and some have removable waist straps. Is she really going to use it though? Dakine, Satch or Osprey etc You could look for a snowboard pack. They usually have a straight back whereas hiking ones are often curved so not practical for books.

Thank you both.

@UselessMumAlert Dd hikes and wears bags much bigger than the one she wears to school, and she uses both the sternum and waist strap, if she needs it.In fact I believe the one she takes for hiking is an Osprey one.

The problem with her Superdry one is that while it is relatively trendy, it's pretty uncomfortable if the bag gets heavy.

It's not a hiking bag she's after but one that works as an everyday bag that she can wear comfortably when she has to carry heavy textbooks to and from school.

I will look at Deuter, thanks.

A lot of the hiking brands (osprey included) do lifestyle/commuter packs too.

Osprey do a range of "urban" packs with laptop pockets etc. It's always easier to choose a backpack IRL though. Cotswold or Go Outdoors will definitely have some good options.

Of course. We will be making a trip at some point during half term.
