wool duvet

I live in a freezing house and, since I need to buy a new duvet anyway, I was thinking of getting a wool one. From what I've read people say that they're a bit stinky initially (but OK after being aired) and that they don't have a very 'plump' appearance, but that they're great at temperature regulation. The latter is definitely my focus, so nothing has put me off so far. What I'm after is advice and recommendations about the brands. Does anyone have experience of wool room / piglet in bed / Floks / Devon duvets or another brand and would particularly recommend / tell me to avoid? Bonus points if anyone has experience of more than one brand and can compare/contrast any!

thank you!

I have a baavet. Yes they are stinky to start with but so cosy.

I have a wool duvet. It hasn't ever smelled odd! They are quite flat and heavy but very warm.

I bought wool as I'm allergic to feathers and got fed up with synthetic duvets not lasting. I got mine from Soak and Sleep, quite pricey but worth it.

Mine is from The Woolroom. I really like it. It doesn't smell. It feels slightly more solid than feathers but you get used to it. It's not heavy, though. I would buy another one.

Been buying from the wool room for years. Would never have a different duvet. Never noticed any smell!

I bought a Slumber down medium weight on eBay. Good value, doesn't smell, airs out well and was a godsend during perimenopause.

We have a baavet. It never smelt that i noticed but I don't find it particularly hot. In winter I use an extra blanket on top, in fact I use an extra blanket most of the year because I feel the cold.

I do really like thd baavet though. It feels different to a down duvet and is supposed to be hypoallergenic because dust mites can't live in wool.

When it's very hot in summer I air it outside in full sun.

I've only recently realised that baavet is pronounced baa-vey as in duvet (du-vey). For years I couldn't understand why it was called a baa-vet 😂

Our wool duvet is from Soak and Sleep. I doesn't smell at all. It is heavier than other types of duvet and is very warm.

We have Devon duvets throughout our bedrooms. Both my sons have them also. I love their initial smell and am so sorry it’s now gone. They are a dream to put in their covers because they are thin and fairy light but are warm in the winter and only on the hottest summer day do I toss them off. I have asthma and other allergies and they are great in that respect also. One of my most splendid decisions.

I have two Baavets. They are fabulous. They didn’t smell but they do come with a lavender bag inside. They never need a wash, just hang them over the washing line in the sun occasionally. Dust mites don’t live in them either. I bought the summer weight ones for my 1960’s semi and they are cosy warm in the winter and lovely and cool in the summer. I bought both duvets in the Bargain Box part of the store. I did have to wait until the one I wanted became available but it was worth the wait. I’ll buy a single for my spare bed next. I throughly recommend them.

We have a Baavet and love it. No fathers poking out and it maintains the weight balance.

fretnot · 20/02/2025 23:38

I’ve wondered about these on and off for years! Have asthmatic/allergic kids but always feared the idea of a moth infestation. Is that an issue?

AthenaPallas · 20/02/2025 23:39

I had a baavet, they don't stink, unless you've never smelt real wool before. The natural smell is lovely imo. They have a nice weighty feel, I loved it, it's really warm though, so when we moved house (to a much warmer house) I gave it to a friend.

I have several bits of bedding from Wool Room including a duvet and i love it. We have the all season washable version and actually only really use the thinner one throughout the year because it’s so warm. It’s also great in summer too. Highly recommend wool.

I have literally just ordered a wool duvet & mattress topper today, from Amazon.
These ones:
Duvet

Topper

Being delivered tomorrow, so I can report back

I have one. It never smelled. I haven't found it good for temperate regulation at all though, I still get boiling hot with it.

kaos2 · 21/02/2025 07:11

Don't wash them they shrink like buggery

SilvieBear · 27/02/2025 23:20

@chillsaremultiplying Am liking the wool duvet very much. It’s a much lighter ‘tog’ than my previous feather / down one (that was 13.5) but I’ve still been lovely and cosy / warm.
It also looks smoother in the morning when I give it a good shake.
I haven’t noticed as much difference with the topper.
But all in all, v happy with my purchases.

bombastix · 27/02/2025 23:36

I have a duvet from wool room and love it. Warm in winter, cool in summer. Recommended. The price from wool room wasn't too bad either.

Bloodtransfusion101 · 27/02/2025 23:46

Baavet. Don’t remember any smell . Still very happy with it.
