Botox for anal fissure yes or no?

Anyone had this procedure? I'm really miserable from the pain of the fissure, but I'm also worried about the potential temporary loss of bowel control following the procedure.

YES YES YES!!!!! A million times yes. I had it and it was miraculous. If you do have it make sure you have plenty of Movicol or Laxido for the next few days, once those days are over you shouldn't have any pain at all.

Feliciacat · 20/02/2025 19:36

I know nothing about this as I’ve not been through an anal fissure or Botox. However, anal fissure sounds terribly painful and debilitating so I think you should at least try Botox. What if it goes really well? Just be prepared for post op life and you should be ok after a couple of weeks. Good luck!

Yes. It worked for me. Took about 4 / 5 weeks to get back to normal. Went back to work at week 3 and I really shouldn't.

As long as I don't eat too much, keep hydrated and active it doesn't even try to flare up.

That's probably because AI / chatGPT can't get an anal fissure.

Dreamer1989 · 20/02/2025 19:43

I had it twice, it didnt help and I eventually had to have an advancement flap, which cured it.

PoltergeistsStartLowKey · 20/02/2025 19:46

No. I spent 2.5 k and it was a waste of time. I was faecally incontinent for over a year after too.

I treated my four year intractable fissure with Nizoral shampoo as I worked out for myself (as a result of treating a patient at the vets I worked at - long story, don't ask) that the reason it wouldn't heal was it was infected with a fungus.

Two weeks later it was halfway healed. A month later it was gone. Four years - FOUR! Like shitting broken glass.

Try Nizoral shampoos diluted first. If that doesn't work, try getting a stronger antifungal. A colleague I advised, used....wallpaper paste as it has an antifungal in it. It worked. I think they get fungally infected early on and that's why they don't heal.

Just my 2d worth😃

I’m not AI, I just wanted to send a supportive message whilst also clarifying that I had no experience.

Yogurtraisins · 20/02/2025 20:19

Yes! A millions times yes. I've had it done after the birth of both of my children. I've gone from not being able to sit down and like another poster said, shitting glass, to having absolutely normal bowel habits. The skin is delicate in that area now and if I'm not careful with diet and fluids I do have some pain and bleeding but this is probably 1-2x a year now.
Honestly go for it, you have nothing to lose. The effects are temporary but long enough for the fissure to heal.
I'd had the gtn (?) Cream and diltiazem for around 6 months prior to the surgery.

OneRealOchreHiker · 20/02/2025 20:59

I’ve had it done and it sort of worked but for a month or so afterwards I had little control over farting and was terrified about sneezing in public. I found fybogel, lactulose and some oily tablets actually allowed it to heal.

Apologies. It just sounded very lighthearted for a miserable procedure.

There's something about the wording of this post that screams GPT to me

I had it twice and surgery on a flap. None of it worked. In the end I was super strict with the cream that give you a headache. Used a surgical glove and put it right inside. That and a strict low cal diet fixed it (less poop) still flares up sometimes when I over eat

MissHollysDolly · 20/02/2025 21:10

Fybogel or dulcolax alongside a high fibre diet and plenty of water for a few months - longer than maybe you'd think - sorted mine. If I have one or two hard stools it comes back tho

Kouklamo · 20/02/2025 21:14

It didn’t work for me. I couldn’t tolerate the cream that gave you a headache either. Plus the general anesthetic gave me horrible constipation.

Honestly I had a very miserable few years and what cured mine was being absolutely rigid about my diet and avoiding any kind of constipation and diarrhoea. I ate a lot of soft fruit avoided pretty much all processed food. I avoided all the horrid fibogel stuff prescribed stuff. I know it sounds crazy but I ended up using surocrem (I didn’t expect it to heal with it but just to soothe the soreness) and 6 months later it had gone. It was the biggest relief ever.

I’ve had quite a few procedures recently and will have more to come. I think I’m pretty trusting of healthcare professionals as I haven’t had any bad experiences. I know I’m lucky for that. I think that’s why I sounded breezy; if it could fix the problem then go for it. It can’t be more miserable than a fissure.

AutumnScream · 20/02/2025 22:32

I didnt know this was a thing?! How does botox help it? I had anal fissures for 9 months after dd was born and the hell was worse than childbirth. Like shitting razor blades and so much blood. It took a numbing cream and countless boxes of movicol a course of 9 months to heal. I plan on asking for more movicol before the next childs born lol.

Whatwhat123 · 20/02/2025 23:20

Its def worth a try, didn’t totally fix mine but I think it helped start the healing process.
For the love of god don’t try Fybogel, that’s what gave me mine in the first place, I tore to the muscle 😭
Hope it helps fissures are truly miserable.

I know this is an old post but do you can any more detail about shampoo please? Like how much you diluted it and did you do a quick rinse or soak in it? Been suffering for 3 years now 😥

I used it quite strong. I just gently washed my bum with it. Don't rinse it off though. Leave it on as a skin dressing and pat it dry. If that doesn't work, use it neat but again, put the shampoo on as you would a cream and leave it in situ.

Mrsworried1 · 03/11/2025 13:48

Hi there everyone. I just wondered how bad your fissures were? Mine is like a literal hole. Have had the GTN cream for 6 weeks. No sign of healing other than it doesn’t bleed AS much.
I am going to have to get back in touch with the GP and I’m anxious as to what the next steps would be.
