Anyone else getting Ocado frozen and fresh in same bag?

DH took in our delivery yesterday afternoon and I just found out that he's put all the frozen stuff in the fridge (in garage) and of course it has all defrosted. I thought they were keeping fresh and frozen separate?

The only thing I'm not keen on is raw meat and salad in the same bag. It goes against all my instincts of food hygiene.

This has been raised time and time again (by me as as well in many a meeting) and actually, contrary to H&S and Food Hygiene practice and policies, standards state that if there are indeed two or more layers of plastic (subject to what plastic it is), raw meat and salad/veg/cooked meat can be put together.

It riles me too.

This annoys me so much! I always get fresh delicate items such as strawberries in the same bag as meat too which IMO is just revolting!

He's working from home and was presenting at a meeting for 90 people at the time, online.

So why order a shop to come when he was too busy to check the bags?

@Mnbvcxz321
I have concerns about tems such as milk, eggs etc leaking. I never order milk because the first time I did there was milk everywhere - in fact all the bags in that crate were sitting in it. The driver was fine and immediately said he would take it all away as soon as we realised what had happened. I do not order any likely to leak fridge items ever. The bags in general have tiny holes and splits which is okay as long as the crate is clean. I would like to know if the crates are cleaned daily, or could my shopping be sitting in a crate that was leaked on by another customer's milk (or something more suble) the previous day for example? From fussy about the bags, and fussy about the crates woman!

SUBTLE!

DTs and RTs as we call them can be registered as dirty/broken etc by humans as they go through the system. At each ‘stop’ of which there are many, personal shoppers or drivers can register the issue on their computer, so in effect yes, the totes could be cleaned daily.
Each warehouse has a cleaning station and each crate (tote) is cleaned by a non-human ☺️
Milk actually is far more vulnerable than eggs. It’s incredibly frustrating. Drivers should have spare bags on board for emergencies of split ones, this check should be carried out before departure.

penni00 · 04/10/2025 23:25

@Mnbvcxz321 Thank you, I do find leaky milk especially scary lol, I wouldn't want anything to have milk spilt on it. Interesting to read your comments, thank you.

Calliopespa · 04/10/2025 23:35

People getting their groceries delivered to the door for just a few pounds and they are still moaning it's all too much effort to check through the bags on receipt.🙄

DH should have checked op. It sounds as though he's shoved whole bags in the fridge without so much as a glance.

penni00 · 09/12/2025 01:26

Well, I am off again, lately I am getting fridge items mixed in with the ambient/cupboard items, all in the same bag I mean. Is this a new system does anyone know please?

penni00 · 09/12/2025 02:12

@Mnbvcxz321 Hi, if chilled items arrive mixed in with ambient items, I mean all in the same bag - what do you think has happened there? Recent example - I think the bag said 'fridge' but contained lots of smallish ambient items along with some large chilled items near the top. Would this mean the chilled items would not be safe to eat, or would they have been kept cold throughout the process even though bagged up with ambient items. Thanks.

FurForksSake · 09/12/2025 07:55

It’ll all be safe to eat, I wouldn’t worry about that. It’s just annoying having to fish things out. Mine aren’t coming too mixed but I know if there’s not much in a bag sometimes the drivers will mix them.

Dutchhouse14 · 09/12/2025 08:21

I no longer get my shop separated into frozen, fridge and cupboard bags. Its all intermingled and has been for a while
Its a shame as I really liked it being sorted in different bags.
My DH also struggles to notice if something (other than obv ice cream, chips and frozen peas) is for fridge or freezer.
If I notice something has been put in fridge rather than freezer we just eat it within a couple of days.

Just means that items have been placed in the bags by humans as always, that’s all.

The explanation for chilled items on top is that ambient are packed first then the totes move to the cold part. We cannot legally do this the other way around and move chilled products to ambient because like you say, the temperature has to remain cold.

All bags are packed within 6 hours pre-delivery and all bags are kept at a chilled (regulated and monitored at 3 degrees) temperature including inside the vans.

I believe the wording on bags is meaningless now. I will enquire.

Nothing sinister in it, I promise 😀

Throwaway65131 · 09/12/2025 11:36

Argh don’t get me started on this :-).

When I get the notification that the van has arrived, I interpret it as “we are rearranging your shopping”!

Granted, my last couple of deliveries, things were in the bags they are meant to be in (and I was pleased and provided positive feedback accordingly) but in the past, I have had frozen items shoved literally anywhere in any bag (even when they’d probably fill two whole bags themselves) making it difficult to prioritise getting frozen stuff put away first. I mention it every time I am asked for the feedback and had hoped they had improved but maybe I have just got lucky.

It’s not been unusual in the past to find combinations like this together in one bag - a bottle of bleach, a packet of frozen veg, a small box of Christmas crackers, some bread, a bunch of bananas, a heavy glass bottle of wine, and a packet of raw chicken.
Seriously no exaggeration.

I understand it’s less individual bags to carry but they could also just carry the bags in the red trays as many have done when not rearranging my shopping quite so much!
The more messed up my items are, the more they end up needing to refund too as more packets are damaged, and sometimes even contaminating or causing further damage to other items - if for eg the damage means the product leaks out.

The other thing I’ve noticed when bags are super mixed up, is that they charge you for say, 16 bags, but if you count them, there’s only 12 (because they’ve combined the contents of some bags). They don’t refund you for those 4 missing bags … and then obviously next collection you only hand over 12 bags which you get refunded for. Whilst that’s only 40p, over a number of deliveries it all adds up!

Unfortunately, there’s a number of groceries I can only find at Ocado, and they’re the only place I know delivers in bags, but mostly it’s for the specific products that I’m a returning customer!

All that said though, last delivery I had a really great driver who didn’t rearrange or mix up everything, told me where the frozen items were, warned me about heavier bags before he passed them to me and even told me which bag contained my eggs! (And yes I fed back the compliment too).

penni00 · 10/12/2025 17:50

@Mnbvcxz321 Thank you. But why would the ambient items have been put in a fridge marked bag please? I mean if the ambient are packed first then the totes moved to the cold part, or does it mean that the totes had both chilled and ambient spare bags in them at the ambient packing stage and a human just put the ambient items in a fridge bag by mistake?

I believe bags labelled ‘ambient’ are being phased out.

throwaway25 · 20/02/2025 11:10

Surely this is a DH problem not an Ocado one?

Exactly. You’d like to think he could tell that something is frozen.

penni00 · 10/12/2025 18:35

@Mnbvcxz321 Oh that might be why then. though I have had ambient bags since. I guess the main take from all this is that items in wrong bags still would have been processed and kept at the right temperatures. That is right isn't it. Can I assume that items in wrong bags never means the items have been at the wrong temperature at any point in the process?
