How early to arrive for Le Shuttle?

Looking to book Le Shuttle crossing for next Feb half term (I know it's a long way away) but wondered how early you need to arrive to allow for passport control..etc so we can book a time that won't leave us rushing in the morning.
Have never used it before and always previously flown.

Any tips welcome!

it’s on their website. Book online, travel on the day, you drive up look at the boards, wait if needed, queue if not, passport controls, get on train. They turn you away if too early. I think 2 hours but check.

We booked a flexi ticket and you could pretty much arrive anytime, once there I think it was like 20 minutes and we were on the train.

It's not like an airport where you can rock up as early as you like and you must catch the exact flight you are booked on.
If you arrive more than 2 hours early, they will turn you away and tell you to come back later, especially at Feb half term as it's one of their busiest times. We go Feb half term most years.

The paperwork says arrive 1 hour before scheduled departure, so as long as you arrive between 1 and 2 hours before your scheduled departure you will be fine. Even if you are later than that, they will still put you on the next train with space but that could be a few hours wait at busy times if you are very late.

Sometimes passport control can have long queues, but there is no panic that you will miss your train like there would be at an airport. They just feed everyone through in order and you will be put on the next train, even if it's not your scheduled one

About an hour. We've arrived much earlier before due to good traffic and been able to hop on an early crossing. Sometimes at a small cost, sometimes free if they're not busy. Half term probably quite busy though.

90 mins during holidays, it gets very busy and passport control is done by the french so if you travel on a British passport you’re in the non-EU and therefore super long queue

outside of holidays I’ve breezed in 45mins before departure

We aim for an hour.

If you can afford a flexible ticket it's a godsend - you can get on any train in a 2 hour window and you jump the queue to get on. Pricey though.

Literally just came back from France yesterday.. I was impressed how simple it all was. (Tunnel Virgin!)
If you are very early there's a huge garage/food outlet just a few miles away..
Even at 8am on Saturday (first day of the half-term) it was very straightforward..

Fab! Thank you so much. Just trying to get my head around it all. I read the website but saw conflicting advice online! Will aim for 2 hours early and go from there.

Assuming same for the way back?

We usually aim for 90 minutes and hope for an earlier train 😊 on the way home we are always really pushing it, because we have inevitably planned a really long drive (France is MASSIVE) but the process is the same and an hour works okay.

MathsMagpie · 20/02/2025 10:32

Thank you'll

We arrived at le shuttle about two hours early, without a flexi ticket last year (we were travelling with our dog for the first time so not sure how long his processing would take).
We paid quite a nominal fee to get on a train about to depart.
So I think there is some flexibility anyway, obviously depending on if the trains full or not.

It was our first time and found it so easy and stress free.

Doing it again this year 😝
