Vitamins and supplements - huuuuge dose?!

I'm trying a few supplements at the moment and have just bought high strength Vitamin D3 as well as B12 and Lion's Mane as recommended on here on another thread. My question is, the D3 is 2000%NRV which is pretty high, but the B12 is a crazy 40,000% - is that ok???! It's seems unnecessarily high, but having googled, it looks to be the norm. Why so high? Surely there's a saturation point where there's no point going any higher. Is it ok to go ahead and take them?

Yes, it's not the same as RDA.

Oh good, I hadn't realised that. Thank you!

Do you know what your actual vitamin D level is currently. I take 3000ius/4000ius alternate days but I have primary hyperparathyroidism which causes low vitamin D levels so I need those doses in the winter especially. You can actually get a condition called hypervitaminosis D or Vitamin D toxicity from too much vitD

This programme discusses Lion's Mane

The idea is really to get your levels up
4000IU is the max dose for vitamin D from what I can remember

I took a high dose course for 2 months then 4000IU daily
Level was 9 in 2020 and it took me bloody ages to get it to 66!
There's a poster who is really good on vitamin D info but I can't remember their name

Found the poster, this was the long thread on vitamin D

If you are vitamin D deficient, what have you been prescribed? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/2841497-If-you-are-vitamin-D-deficient-what-have-you-been-prescribed

I now only take the recommended dose of vit D as someone told me it's toxic if you have too much

Do some research on bioavailability, and fat soluble and water soluble vitamins/supplements.

Bioavailability means how much of it you can absorb. This depends on the exact chemical used (eg there are many different iron or magnesium compounds used in supplements) - but it will be less than 100%, so you don't get the full stated dose anyway. It also depends what you eat/drink with them - e.g. vitamin C helps iron absorption, other combinations can block/hinder absorption .

With solubility: broadly, if they're water soluble, you will pee out any excess.
If they're fat soluble, it can build up in your body and may cause side effects in excess, so best to be more aware.

Also worth looking at elimination half-lives - how long it takes for your body to process it and eliminate the metabolites once processed.

It typically takes a couple of months to raise levels if you start out deficient in something, but in some cases you can take too much and end up in excess, so worth doing the research on the supplements relevant to you.

I read the label on high dose vitamin d wrong. I was taking one a day when it was surprised to be one every five days. I did it for two years over covid and when I had my bloods checked for another reason my doctor nearly fell off his chair noting how high my vit d was. He said it was nearly at toxic levels. So Do read the labels carefully. I now take a high dose spray vitamin b12, which the doctor has said is fine.

Forgot to add that I take a magnesium supplement with the vitD supplement as it helps absorption!
