Can we normalise…

Not “normalising” everything you consider to be slightly edgy and just live your life how you see fit without constantly seeking approval.

This is lighthearted - I’m just sick of people pertaining to raise awareness over totally non-controversial things like “can we normalise not having a clean home” just live your life people 🤣

Totally agree OP! Does my head in.
Like 'can we normalise small homes' then it's actually massive/been meticulously designed and renovated to within an inch of its life with the use of an architect, interior designer and loads of 'gifted' stuff that all matches. So normal.

Then there's me....
Let's normalise equal pay yay

I hate that stupid phrase too. Ditto "I don't know who needs to hear this but..."

OMG yes that too! NOBODY needs to hear it 😭

Ugh I also hate it when influencers say ‘why is no one talking about….’ when people are constantly banging on about said thing. Which is ‘can we normalise’ by another name really .

In my algorithm it’s a lot of ‘why does no one talk about how hard it is to be a working mother?’ ‘Why does no one talk about how hard the newborn phase can be?’ ….. I shit you not!

Arrggghhhhhh · 19/02/2025 17:48

It’s just a way of saying let’s not judge individuality. However this is mumsnet where people come to judge. So we’ll just have to normalise judgy comments on mumsnet

PrincessASDaisy · 19/02/2025 17:48

Can we normalise not making a MN post about everything

Grin
couldabutdidnt · 19/02/2025 17:50

Haha yes. See also when they make up stuff people supposedly said to get clicks.

’People said I was crazy when I … <insert totally unshocking thing like painted bathroom ceiling blue/gave baby solids at 5 months >

WonderingWanda · 19/02/2025 17:50

Totally agree op....attention seeking bullshit everywhere you look on social media.

Normally it’s just a way to show off and seem a bit edgy.

That would sort of undermine the point of MN though.

Seem a bit edgy, some of us ARE a bit edgy,

Surely that’s something others decide - if you have to make a point of getting others on board it’s just an aspiration.

'why is no one talking about...' when people are constantly banging on about said thing

You sometimes see threads on here where the OP says:

"Why is nobody talking about X topic - it's appalling and nobody cares. There's nothing in the news, it is a disgrace and no-one is discussing it".

And then the first half dozen replies point out that there are already threads on MN, it's currently in the top three news items on the BBC website, Sky News are talking about it on the telly at that very minute, and there was a discussion on Radio 4 two hours ago.

Others perhaps.. But not YOU.

GatherlyGal · 19/02/2025 18:06

Agree OP.

Also "weaponising" bad things. By using them as examples of.........bad things.

AlwaysCoffee25 · 19/02/2025 18:07

Arrggghhhhhh · 19/02/2025 18:01

My point is if you have to convince everyone else around you that you’re edgy, and it’s not already apparent to them, you’re just kidding yourself.

@theboffinsarecoming yes it’s just the first time it’s entered their consciousness.

I don’t even know what you are referring to by the word “edgy” TBH
In my day it meant cutting edge.

AlwaysCoffee25 · 19/02/2025 18:12

@Arrggghhhhhh if you don’t know what it means how have you been able to discuss it?

OP posts:

Can I 'reach out' and say I agree with you, Op.

AlwaysCoffee25 · 19/02/2025 18:15

@menopausalmare I always visualise someone stretching over a desk with their arm outstretched 🤣
