Matt or gloss kitchen

Currently gloss, do love it but wondering whether to go Matt. Heard that Matt is harder to clean and leaves more marks?

I kinda think it depends on the matt? Only my experience, but we went for a dark matt blue in the last kitchen, shaker style. That showed fingerprints more than anything i've ever seen, but i think it was more the colour than the finish. We've now got a matt light grey and they're brilliant- much more sympathetic to my cleaning regime, anyway.

I've got matt grey and I love it. Occasionally shows the odd mark, but not to the extent of my friend's gloss kitchen, which reminds me of an operating theatre crossed with a fingerprint taking device. But she enjoys cleaning more than I do, so it suits her.

We are renovating our kitchen just now and had originally ordered a Matt kitchen, but we looked on YouTube / social media for cleaning reviews of the exact kitchen and it just looked an absolute nightmare, even when cleaning using the manufacturers instructions.

The final thing that swung it for us was that my work recently installed Matt kitchens and tables everywhere and the slightest bit of food just caused massive marks and it doesn't wipe easily

I’m wondering if you mean silk rather than gloss as gloss is for wood. Silk has the finish which is a glossy finish and a lot of paints come in matt or silk. This is good if you have kids as you say! Only thing is that if you want to revert to matt you have to prepare and paint over the old silk with a special lotion otherwise you can’t paint over it.

Hi thank you for the comments so far it’s specifically for the kitchen units

This is what bothers me

I have dogs as well as humans to factor in the mix

Thinking about it, I agree with the pp who said it's more the colour than the finish. As I said, I love my matt grey, and it doesn't mark or show dirt particularly, whereas my friend's glossy red kitchen seems to smear if you breathe near it. I suspect if she had gloss white it wouldn't be as bad.

Our last kitchen was blue gloss top cupboards and matt grey base. Neither were a problem. The current one is matt cashmere and shows every mark.

We have matt white (Ikea Axstad) and it's a nightmare. Looks lovely when it's clean but shows every fingerprint / watermark (even steam marks from boiling veg etc). It needs wiping down every day. Previous kitchen was white gloss (not high-shine, but light refecting), and it was far FAR easier to keep looking good. I'd never get matt white again. Not sure how this works for other colours though (or indeed for higher-end brands)...

We have white gloss and it does show marks but you have to be fairly up close to really notice them and they wipe away easily with a damp microfibre cloth.

Interestingly, I went for matt bebecaus it doesn't show marks the way gloss would. My units are sage green and are very easy to keep clean.

Go to B&Q or some other kitchen warehouse and look at the display kitchens. The matte ones are marked and look greasy. I'm not a fan on a practical level but do think they look lovely when new and clean!

Maybe the matt finish on mine is better at not showing marks. My kitchen was from Magnet.
