Left DH at A&E - what can I expect?

NotUpForBeingOuted · 18/02/2025 13:36

DH had a very brief "funny turn" this morning - lost vision in one eye for a few seconds, felt weird in the head, and then (apart from a very mild headache - rated less than 1/10) has felt pretty much normal (apart from a "slightly strange feeling") ever since.

GP said straight to A&E, so I took him.

He's had very basic obs (BP and HR - normal) and was waiting for doctor.
Then I had to leave to pick up kids.

I know no one can tell me what this will be, if anything. But can anyone tell me what tests they're likely to run, and how long they're likely to take? Will he need CT head? ECG? Just a quick check-over??

TIA

Hope all is well, OP.
The positive news is he was 'himself' when you took him in, so hopefully they'll get to the bottom of it quickly and it's nothing or easily sortable.

lurkingfromhome · 18/02/2025 15:40

My dad had this some years ago and it did indeed turn out to be a TIA. They did lots of tests, put him on blood thinners, didn’t let him drive for 6 weeks and that was about it. He’s now 86 and fighting fit with ‘excellent’ blood pressure according to his GP.

TriathlonTriathlonTriathlon · 18/02/2025 15:42

I’ve had this twice, GP said it was a migraine and didn’t even check anything else out! I couldn’t see properly and then felt really tired after. He said it was quite common.

You're all fabulous - thank you. Helping me to think straight, and also to know how many relatively benign things this could be.

I'll see if I can dump the kids on friends and take him something to eat/drink at least. He has money, and there are vending machines, but in all likelihood he won't have had anything, and didn't even have breakfast this morning. And tomorrow, I am going out to get him a phone, no matter how much he disapproves.

It all sounds very dramatic for what you’re describing.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 18/02/2025 15:44

I had similar recently but my symptoms were a little more suggestive of a stroke or TIA. I had a nine-hour wait to see a doctor, who thought it was unlikely to be a stroke but sent me for a CT scan and referred me to the stroke clinic as a caution. I was seen by the stroke clinic the next day.

There’s always one!

Op is allowed to be worried about her dh.

She did the right thing taking him to hospital after a brief loss of vision so what are you saying?

Gloriia · 18/02/2025 15:53

As he doesn't have a phone what was the plan to contact you to pick him up, just use a payphone? You don't tend to see them nowadays ime.

Hmm That wasn't very helpful or supportive. If the GP sent him straight to A and E he will have had good reason to.

@NotUpForBeingOuted wishing you and your husband all the best Flowers, and yes, get him a phone. There are very few public phones these days, and it is situations like this where he really does need a phone.

PinkPonyClub25 · 18/02/2025 15:54

Considering his pain rating was 1/10 I'm sure he's completely fine.

This is why he's being seen by doctors, not you. TIAs are often totally painless.

You don't know that.

Did you read: GP said straight to A&E?

PinkPonyClub25 · 18/02/2025 16:06

Great job at scarying the op. Well done.

Wendolino · 18/02/2025 16:06

It sounds exactly what my BIL had last year. It was a TIA. He had a thorough examination while he was in A&E, bloods, ECG, BP, Ct head scan. He was discharged to the TIA clinic and from there he was sent for heart scan, neck blood vessels scan, more bloods. He was put on statins and clopidogrel and told to stop smoking as that's by far the biggest risk factor in his case. He's absolutely fine but still smoking.

Sunhatweather · 18/02/2025 16:07

It’s perfectly right that he went to A&E for this, OP.
Ignore the slightly odd and uneducated posters saying it’s dramatic or not necessary. He’ll need to be checked for a few things, but hopefully it’s just a migraine 💐

BabyDream2025 · 18/02/2025 15:44

It all sounds very dramatic for what you’re describing.

You obviously have no knowledge of stroke or TIA symptoms

anyolddinosaur · 18/02/2025 16:16

Not dramatic at all. While it's quite possibly a retinal migraine it isnt possible to say that without a proper examination. His go could have tried sending him to specsavers (honestly) first but opticians dont often have good enough equipment to rule out more serious things so he'd have probably been sent to eye a&e if they have one, It might have got him seen a bit faster if sent by an optician.

Eye issues can be more of an emergency than a broken leg.

CleanShirt · 18/02/2025 16:18

Could it be a migraine? They're a bit shocking if you've never had one before.

ERthree · 18/02/2025 16:25

Hope you have managed to get to see him x

Cakeandcardio · 18/02/2025 16:34

Could it be a migraine?

Notimeforaname · 18/02/2025 16:34

Random things like that just happen at times., bit of a headache, funny eye/ears etc. Sounds like he's anxious about it and believes its something else.

BigSkyDreams · 18/02/2025 16:37

and didn't even have breakfast this morning.

It's possibly this OP.

PinkPonyClub25 · 18/02/2025 15:54

Considering his pain rating was 1/10 I'm sure he's completely fine.

My daughter nearly died because she has a very high pain threshold, so her rating was very low too. So that’s a really stupid assumption for you to make.

Broken12 · 18/02/2025 16:49

My ex has similar and was sent to a&e. they sent him to an eye specialist who did some sort of eye scan/check and was told he was fine and sent home after about 20 hours. Reason they take it seriously he was told was because if there is an issue it needs to be resolved straight away in order to not cause any further issues. Hopefully he is home soon x
