If you have premium bonds?

Why do you have them? I know they are tax free. But I watched a video with Martin Lewis explaining and he said you have to have £10,000 before you start winning. How much do you have and have you won much or regularly?

I've got about 15k, it's my unofficial fuck off fund as it can be drawn down in a few days if needed. I win the equivalent of a high street bank interest, and unlike the security and ease of access. It doesn't dip with the stock market etc. DH won 10k a little while ago with about 30k invested.

Mischance · 16/02/2025 15:57

I have the full £50k. I get as much interest if not more than I would get in an easy access savings account. I need to be able to access the money so can't tie it up in anything else.

£250 this month and that happens regularly. Add in the frisson of possibly getting a big win and it suits me.

NameChanges123 · 16/02/2025 15:58

I have about £20k and I probably win something every 2 -3 months. Not had a big win yet but I'm hopeful 😀

I depleted my bonds quite a lot last year (probably by £8k). I won more when I had more bonds.

I've started buying them every month again.

That's not true, my dd has less than that abd she has won a bigger monthly prize than I have with 5 x more. It's luck.

Because it’s safe gambling for someone like me that likes the thrill of maybe winning 1M every month!
It’s returned 4.5% last year which isn't too bad. The money is safe and easily accessible. And tax free which is a bonus if you’re a higher rate tax payer.
I have ISA’s too which I would prioritise over PB though.

edwinbear · 16/02/2025 16:09

I have £50k of premium bonds. I max out my ISA every year so have them for the tax benefits. Usually win around £100-£150 a month.

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 16/02/2025 16:10

Over the last year I get about 4.5% winnings and it’s tax free.

WeAllHaveWings · 16/02/2025 16:14

I have £50k. This month won £775 🥳 Over last 12 months it's been a 3.9% return.

SuffolkBargeWoman · 16/02/2025 16:14

Pension and ISA maxed out every year.
Couple of high interest accounts for proper savings.
PB max holdings as easy access without losing interest on high interest accounts and added frisson of a potential win.
I usually win a bit every month.

Chanel05 · 16/02/2025 16:17

I had 50k in at one point (inheritance that I was saving for a house move) and over the course of around 1.5 years I won money most months. Most was £1000.

DH has full holdings and wins most months. Most he's won is £600. I think this month was £250.

TorroFerney · 16/02/2025 16:22

Chasingsquirrels · 16/02/2025 15:53

Part of a mixed investment portfolio and I'm risk adverse.

Just checked and averaged 3.3% over the last 6m. As I'm higher rate and have other interest over my allowance that increases the effective return.

Won £5k a couple of years ago.
(Then then next month my dad won £10k on approx £25k holdings).

Exactly the same for me/us in terms of why Higher rate tax payer, I have the maximum amount as does my husband.

LavenderFields7 · 16/02/2025 16:22

Why? Because if your a higher rate tax payer they are worth it, because otherwise savings interest is taxed. Also it’s like playing the lottery but you don’t lose any money, so there’s the thrill of checking the prize checker app each month. Also forces me to save.

Lifestooshort71 · 16/02/2025 16:27

I've got £50k and average just over 4% a year. The capital is safe, I can get hold of it in an emergency and there's always the thought of a big prize. Oh, and they can't get their hands on any winnings! What's not to like?

TubeScreamer · 16/02/2025 16:29

Because they’re tax free and my ISA is maxed out.
plus it is easy to transfer funds in and out if I need to

InMyMNEra · 16/02/2025 16:32

I have £10,000. I won 3 x £50 last year, nothing for about 3 years before that.

Why? Because it seemed like a bit of fun. My dad used to win quite frequently

NImumconfused · 16/02/2025 16:36

I have just under 4k, built up over the last couple of years as monthly savings in advance of eldest going to uni. I've had £350 in prizes over the last two years so similar to a decent savings interest rate. Happy to take the risk of lower returns in exchange for the dream of winning the jackpot!

ErrolTheDragon · 16/02/2025 16:37

The 10k thing is just an estimate of how much you need to invest to be statistically likely to win roughly the average amount, I think.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 16/02/2025 16:40

I think £200 or £250. They were given as gifts for 16th, 18th and 21st birthday by family. I have won about £100 back in the 20 years or so I’ve had them so probably not a great investment but equally it’s fun to think I could win a large amount one day and I don’t need the money enough to faff about withdrawing them at the moment.

BeckyBloom · 16/02/2025 16:40

I have 50,000 and win something most months. I won 5,100 in November which is my biggest win since investing in 2020.

2025willbemytime · 16/02/2025 16:42

I have five figures and win nearly every month. Lately the wins have been bigger as well. Not uncommon to win three prizes.

RabbitsRock · 16/02/2025 16:47

I have £100 which DF bought me years ago. I’ve won £25.

ViciousCurrentBun · 16/02/2025 16:52

DH had a return of 4% last year on 20k, I only have 1k and had a one off £25. It’s worth it if you have maxed out your ISA.

Katieweasel · 16/02/2025 17:07

Last year I won £650 in total, getting something 10 out of the 12 months. This was about a 4% return. Then started this year with a £5k win in January! What a start to the year. A slightly lower £25 win in Feb. I like the build up every month. Will I win a million, nope. Will I win £100k, nope. Yay £25!

BatInATopHat · 16/02/2025 17:10

We have the full 50k in and returns are rubbish now. We do win every month but it's usually between £25-£75 with the very occasional £500-£1000

We will probably take it out soon and put it in a savings account for a guaranteed return

Hyperion100 · 16/02/2025 17:16

Had full allocation for about 10 years and generally see about a 5% return.
