What age to switch from a Happy Meal?

RhubarbThumb · 16/02/2025 13:41

My DS is 6 (7 in March) and went with a school friend swimming, and went for McDonald's after and the other boy (was 7 in October) was bought an adults medium meal.

Is 7ish the age? I was thinking maybe 11/12??

You can - mine used to have lemonade with theirs.

I had a diet coke with mine, last week

That's so weird I definitely couldn't get it a couple of times when I was there looking at a happy meal but you're right I've just checked and you can now.

God knows what was going on

It’s a forum and if you read my post you’ll see I offered a suggestion.

Where would you suggest?

You also can't get fizzy drinks anymore with a happy meal.

Yes you can. I had Fanta just a few days ago.

DragonFly98 · 16/02/2025 17:04

There is 532 in a happy meal cheeseburger and fries that’s without dip or a drink. More than enough for a meal for an under 12. By the time you add on lunch or dinner, breakfast a snack and drinks that would easily be the required cicra 1700 calories for a 11 year old.

Whycanineverthinkofone · 16/02/2025 17:05

A happy meal is the same
size as a small meal though?

it’s a burger or nuggets in a box with small
fries? Same amount, same calories, same. Just more child attractive.

it’s not like you’re getting special miniature handcrafted meals.

my 14 year old regularly has a happy meal. Likes the box rather than juggling a bag or a tray.

I'm 55 and a HAPPY MEAL is just the right size for me. I got a Sonic the hedgehog toy last time xx

Not very good toys though. I miss the days when it would have been a good solid Sonic toy.
We still have toys from over a decade ago 😁

JustCuttinAboot · 16/02/2025 17:08

I’m 57 - I like the happy meal, it’s the right size for me.

532 in a small cheeseburger and fries too. They are the same.

if the kid wants a small cheeseburger and fries it’s no different to a happy meal calorie wise.

ask the kid. If they want the box and toy etc, fine, if they’d rather not have a “child”
meal, don’t.

You always get that person…

There’s more of us than you think.

I just don’t care about the pile on and think people should grow up and realise we can have different opinions and still remain ‘chill.’

RedToothBrush · 16/02/2025 17:09

I'll let you know when I decide. I'm 46.

It's about appetite and size not age.

The toys are rubbish now. I miss the 'plastic tat' days.

Literally nobody is piling onto you. None of us give a shite that you're judging us for giving our kids McDonald's.

KFC. 😏

I very rarely eat McDonald’s but if I do I have a happy meal because I’m calorie counting. There’s not much food in it at all. My younger siblings have both been having an adult portion since they were about 7 though. No weight problems there.

My sister is 12 and would laugh in my face if I suggested she have a happy meal.

I am calorie counting and I love the McDonald’s wraps. The sweet chilli is very good - and less than 400 calories.

I probably only find myself in a McDonald about twice a year, but good to have a healthy menu item that I know I will really enjoy.

PitchOver · 16/02/2025 17:15

Mine started having a double cheeseburger meal (comes with medium fries) at age 8. Now at 10, sometimes he will get chicken nuggets on the side if he's particularly famished!

Flomingho · 16/02/2025 17:16

Not helpful but on the rare occasion I have a Maccies it is a Happy Meal and I am 45!😆 I think really it would depend on the child's appetite rather than their age. Some children pick at food and some eat lots.

charmanderflame · 16/02/2025 17:22

pearbottomjeans · 16/02/2025 13:59

Are you judging? For all you know the kid left half of it??

My older kids are 7&10 and would generally have main menu. Theres not much choice in a happy meal. Plus much less waste (yeah you can get a book and the toys are now non-plastic too but it’s all just waste ultimately). A frigging minion shaped tin per happy meal - what are we meant to do with 2 of those??

DS2 has never finished any meal in his entire life, DS1 stops when he’s full, so I have no need to worry about overeating.

Edited

I'm not judging here (I love a Maccie's!) but really, if you care about waste then a happy meal toy is the least of the environmental concerns....

If you're gonna go there anyway, it really doesn't matter what you have.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 16/02/2025 17:27

When the happy meal doesn’t fill them up and they want food not tat

Avoid the chips, though. Their chips are awful these days.

So true! Even my 2 year old won't touch them which is saying something, he's a chip fiend.

If you are a true "South London Mum" shouldn't you be going to Morley's 🐔😁

My mum is 70 and still has them 🤷🏻‍♀️

The new katsu chicken wraps are 10/10 😋
