What activities do your 10yo DS’ do?

I am wondering what activities/hobbies your 10yo DS’ do please, as we are looking for ideas for things to suggest to DS.

He already does tennis, Cubs, and swimming but he’d like to try something else too - anything really, no need for it to be a sports activity. He’d like to try indoor climbing.

He’s already tried basketball, football, and two types of martial arts but for various reasons - including probable dyspraxia (waiting for assessment) - these weren’t for him. Team sports don’t seem to be his thing because he has no confidence when working together as a team in sports (and other kids have been nasty about this), which I think is why he enjoys tennis so much.

Would cricket work? His tennis skills would be of benefit, and although a team sport, less so than football as bat yourself etc.

if not, pickleball and padel are different but racket based… although you have to play in pairs.

has he tried taking go his tennis further by entering some low grade tournaments? That can fill up lots of time!

My DS has similarities to yours and he does karate, badminton and competitive fishing.

He absolutely LOVES fishing, discovered it when he was 8 and hasn't looked back.

The canal and river trust do free taster sessions and 1-1 coaching with all equipment provided through their Let's Fish programme - it's brilliant. There are also a growing number of junior clubs across the country.. PM me if you want more details of clubs specific to your area.

I should add - we have no history of fishing in our family, but it's become a wonderful pastime for him and me to spend time together as well as the competitive stuff he does.

My ds does hockey, cricket and table tennis. He plays 2 instruments which take up the rest of the time practising!

My ds does the same hobbies as yours. He used to do rugby but didn't suit him and now prefers tennis, I expect for the same reasons as yours.
His other activities are drama (he goes to Drama Kids which I think have clubs all over), piano lessons and currently does an after school code club which he loved.

He has also done a couple of summers of cricket through the ECBs programmes which work out food value. (All stars and dynamos, run by clubs all over UK), which he enjoyed although hasn't wanted to take it further / join team for matches yet.

I think mine wants to have a change from tennis now, but keen for him to keep up some exercise so interesting to see the other suggestions here.

Has he tried an instrument?

Mishmashs · 16/02/2025 06:40

Mine does football, cubs and swimming lessons. He did taekwondo for two years. I don’t really need for him to do more as he has long school days, having to stay at afterschool club. He’d love to do volleyball but they don’t seem to start extra curricular training till senior school.

Archery?

Or is there a parcour club near you? It’s great for dyspraxic children according to my colleague.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

@Yellowtulipsdancing he has said he would like to try cricket but he’s worried about not hitting the ball. I think this stems more from kids being quite nasty to him at football & basketball (coaches always delay with this we’ll, but it’s stayed with him).

He only started tennis about 8 months ago and is loving it, but too early for tournaments just yet but that is a good thought for the future. Next month his Cubs group are going to the new Padel club near us so that could be a goer given that he enjoys tennis.

@PurBal he tried guitar and quickly got bored with having to practice! I don’t think he’s got the patience and perseverance for learning an instrument unfortunately. We did take him to an open day at a music lesson centre and he was interested in the drums but not mentioned it since.

@MinnieMountain he did love archery when on holiday last year and we ended up doing it 3 times but I think our local club has an upper minimum age limit- I’ll check again, thanks

@Mishmashs volleyball is one I hadn’t thought if so I’ll see what he thinks, although I had better check if he can do that somewhere first

@Simplelobsterhat he’d like to try cricket but as I said above some kids have been awful to him in team sports.

@tinofbeans id have never of thought of fishing! I know nothing about this - do you keep them or throw them back?

I can't speak for all cricket clubs but certainly in my sons experience the initial sessions for something like dynamos aren't really team matches or anything, more focussing on skills, so not dissimilar to early tennis lessons. It's usually a 6 weeks taster I think. My son seemed to enjoy and there was no pressure.

But as a non sporty, non coordinated person with 2 children who have inherited that, I feel your pain about the other kids. Drama has been nice for that reason.

Kayaking
junior parkrun
cycling

Sazeracc · 16/02/2025 07:47

My DS does Tetrathlon. Has doesn't enjoy team sports, but this works well for him as they compete both individually and in teams of four so he gets the social benefits of being part of a team.

My DS had various hobbies at age 10 that probably wouldn't be your DS's cup of tea (music, choir, dance). His other big thing was (and is!) windsurfing... lots of clubs meet on reservoirs, you don't need to be near the coast. Every RYA club will have a kids training programme and kit to borrow. It's an amazing sport (it can be done for fun or to lead to racing, solo or in teams) and very very friendly.
