If I use two tea bags am I halving the time I have to wait for my brew?

And if I chucked 6 tea bags in am I making a perfect cuppa in seconds?

No because surely the liquid will still take the same length of time to cool down to drinkable, so not halving the waiting time.

Interesting. I'm never waiting for cool down time- when its piping hot I'm on tiny sippy sips, can move to big gulps after a while but I'm quite partial to the boiling sips

I think not because the different flavours take different lengths of time to dissolve. You might get the same strength tea but a different flavour to steeping one teabag for longer.

I'm really into tea.

Tea bags take time to stew to full flavour, so doubling up on teabags and reducing infusion time still wouldn't allow for that.

Interesting thought though! Might try it anyway Smile

more tea bags absorbs more water

TwoFatDucklings · 15/02/2025 22:03

Interesting question. Is there something about surface area of the tealeaves that are in contact with the water too... The water needs to be able to swirl around the tea leaves, if you have 6 bags in a mug, would the water be able to perculate around them sufficiently in a matter of seconds. Would the leaves right in the centre of the bag have the time to infuse? Maybe a greater number of smaller bags? Also the more bags you put in your mug, the more you'd be reducing the volume of water you could add.

OP you need to do some experiments. Please report back with your findings

I can hear you slurping from over here.... Envy

Different element of the flavour are released at different times.
A very short brew time with lots of leaves will give a fresh mild taste with no depth of flavour nor tannin under notes.

Some blends (especially the 'one cup' ones use a tea variety which gives colour quickly so that is you watch it in the mug it seems that you are getting good 'value', but 4 mins in boiling hot water will always give the best version of what the tasters designed.
This is all based on 'British tea' by the way.
Different types of tea will have different rules to bring out the best.

I find tea which has been brewed in what is meant to be the proper way quite horrible but love a quickly swished through the boiling water kind of brew. You lot would hate me as I get two cuppas out of one bag.

AllHisCaterpillarFriends · 15/02/2025 22:59

I'm with @RaininSummer so I think two teams bags would shorten the time to get a good cup.

I couldn't leave a bag in for FOUR minutes. It would a. Be cold and B. Taste awful

Agree with this.

But also think you should do some controlled experiments. One bag in a cup, for normal time. Two bags in a cup for half time. Four bags in a cup for quarter time. Drink and report back! You could get someone to do it for you, label the cups and you taste without knowing which was which.

I feel like this is an important question which deserves time, research and multi variant trials. Please report back with interim findings. I’ll rustle up some biscuits 🍪

Btw, slightly off topic but DH and I decided we weren’t happy with our long term somewhat lazy commitment to Tetley, and conducted a full range of blind tasting with 6-7 different brands. We’re now very happy Yorkshire good customers 😂
