Would you get checked tonight or just keep an eye?

I was playing with my 3 month old baby. She was cooing and smiling at me and babbling away. I moved my face closer to hers and she paused, raised her arms above her head, she went all glazed over and then shut her eyes for 5-10 seconds. It was like she was asleep. I picked her up and she opened her eyes a little bit but looked very sleepy as if I’d only just woken her up from a long sleep. Her eyes then filled with tears and she let out a really odd cry. The whole episode lasted about 30 seconds but in the 10 seconds that her eyes were closed I was really panicked. I just thought ‘this doesn’t seem right for her’. I have never seen her do it before. I fed her and then she seemed happy again, kicking about and normal self.

She had her 12 week jabs on Wednesday, if that’s at all relevant (maybe it could be?)

She was just very out of it for that 30 seconds but equally she is a small baby and maybe something I did just spooked her. I have googled though and it sounds almost seizure like, but know google can be awful for putting the worst case scenario in your head. People say ‘what’s your instinct’ but I don’t have one and don’t know whether to watch her tonight and get a GP appointment in the morning or if she needs to be seen in A&E.

I do worry anyway so don’t want to extend my health anxiety to my baby but obviously want to make sure she is ok.

Thank you

Sorry it isn’t helpful to say trust your instinct but that’s all you can say really.

Im convinced my boy had a seizure once when about 2 months. Still to this day 3 years later. But it was dark. I was sleep deprived and it was the middle of the night so wasn’t really sure and straight after he seemed fine again.

Nothing ever happened since and he’s fine so fingers crossed I either imagined it or it was a one off.

But yes I just think you are going to have to trust your instinct.

YesHonestly · 15/02/2025 21:27

I think you should get her checked with her being so little.

SillyOlivePanda · 15/02/2025 21:29

At 3 months old no one will mind you taking a wee one in to A+E. How does she seem in herself? There’s always 111 too for advice.

I don’t want to worry you and I know this will but with the way you described her arms going up, it might be worth keeping a close eye to see if she does it again, a rare type of epilepsy can present like that called infantile spasms. It’s very very very unlikely so please don’t panic, I’m sure your wee one is fine.

She seems fine in herself since - totally - that’s what’s difficult, she is happy and babbling, has fed as normal and has now fallen asleep (normal length wake window). She’s asleep on me. Thank you. That’s what I saw on Google too

Could you phone 111 to get their opinion? Having said that they always recommend going to A&E in my experience but it will be a second opinion and they do have medical knowledge

Teaformenow · 15/02/2025 21:33

I’d get her checked out, the arms above her head does sound seizure like. Although I am absolutely no expert.

harijes · 15/02/2025 21:34

Instinct, always. Go there and be checked and sent home. Always instinct with a baby

If you’re worried take her to be checked it won’t do any harm.

It's worried you, I would go now. I think doctors would always prefer to see a baby and it be nothing at all than not and it turn out to be something.

Pinkpillow7 · 15/02/2025 21:41

It sounds quite akin to a seizure. You need to take her to A&E

JulietSierra · 15/02/2025 21:47

My dd used to have breath holding attacks when she was a baby. It sounds similar to what you’ve described but was always preceded by her crying. They happened when she was very upset. She cry and cry and then just stop, go floppy and be completely out of it. Her lips would sometimes turn blue . Terrifying but completely harmless and apparently quite common. When she came round from one of these attacks she’d let out the most pitiful cries but would soon be back to normal.
The gp referred my dd to a paediatrician to rule out epilepsy. The breath holding attacks stopped after maybe 6 months.
Go get your baby checked over but please try not to panic. It could be absolutely nothing to worry about.

JSMill · 15/02/2025 23:17

It's always best to get such a young baby checked out.

Your instinct or OP's? You seem to be telling OP to use her instincts but go to A&E?

Eldermilleniallyogii · 15/02/2025 23:25

OP I think I would go in your circumstances and with a baby your age I'd expect you'll be seen pretty quickly.

harijes · 16/02/2025 09:00

@Eldermilleniallyogii fair enough. I should have expanded, the fact she had a gut feeling that it didn't seem right and posted about it would be the instinct, if something doesn't feel right get it checked.
