My DD is autistic and wanted to get her hair done.

She had it bleached a year ago and it's half way grown out (so 50% dirty blonde roots and 50% bleached hair)

We went in and she was over whelmed and Ishe had a patch test and booked in for highlights, which is what she thought she wanted.

So half head highlights.
Wash, cut and style.

But now she is saying she wants her hair to be all blonde. She just wants the 50% roots to match the bottom of her hair. No highlights or lowlights.

She doesn't want the woman to use the hairdryer on her or style it (sensory issue I didn't even think about, she's not used a hairdryer in years and years)

And she doesn't want her to cut any of her hair but she does want her grown out fringe blended into her hair.

So is that colour, no style and blending a long fringe in much different to what we booked?

IE do I need to call them to change the booking?

Her appointment is in the morning and she's just said all this 😐

Do you think I need to call or just tell them tomorrow?

Yes very different.

You need to call.

NinnyNa · 14/02/2025 19:38

They're not answering, they must have closed early.

It's less work though so should still be able to be done?

OP posts:
NinnyNa · 14/02/2025 19:39

She really wanted the full works bit is panicking now. She's never been to a salon before and had all this done so she just wants the colour done and just her fringe blending.

Understood, but you need to ring the salon and explain. And do that ahead of her appointment.

I can't now

They supposedly close at 8pm and I was ringing from 7pm

They open at 10am and that's when her appointment is.

I have bad anxiety and I'm really worried now.

Will they be annoyed because it's not as much money?

A full blonde dye is done with highlights these days. That's what I have anyway. It takes 3 hours so probably not possible to change from half head to full head even without blow dry.

titchy · 14/02/2025 20:32

Surely she'll need the whole lot done, they won't do just the top half and hope it colour matches.

NinnyNa · 14/02/2025 20:35

I don't know? When she was having highlights they said it would only half a head? And that's what it says on the booking?

But they saw her hair? And said it would be half highlights? Wouldn't it be quicker putting bleach on the whole head rather than doing foil highlights?

I don't understand at all

This is why I hate going to the hairdressers :(

It's so stressful

Full head colour is quicker to do than highlights imo.

I'd also say fine for no drying and just cutting fringe.
It'll just not take up the full allocated time.

Just explain when you go and that you tried to call.

Do they have a Facebook page? Might be worth a message as might pick it up tonight or before app tomorrow.

I'm having my hair cut also by the same lady.

I've looked online and she still has appointment space tomorrow available so she's not fully booked

When I have my hair dyed blonde every 8-10 weeks it is a full head of foils. Takes ages even when only doing the top few inches. They also put a toner on which is another 20-30 mins.
Some places may be different?

ioveelephants · 14/02/2025 20:50

Hi I'm a hairdresser. Sounds like she wants a scalp bleach now not all hair dressers like to do this as it means putting bleach directly on her scalp and will take just as long. Half a head of highlights is just the top half of your head from forehead to the crown full head is from forehead to the nape. If she has sensory issues I would warn her bleach doesn't feel very nice on your scalp and encourage her to got for highlights ask if you pay extra can they do more foils for maximum coverage. Don't panic you tried to call and couldn't get through so just explain tomorrow they'll be fine. X

NinnyNa · 14/02/2025 20:50

She's got a 2.5 hour slot and my cut is booked after.

Then her next 3 hours of appointments are still available

OP posts:
NinnyNa · 14/02/2025 20:51

I dint think time is an issue because she doesn't want a full haircut now or a blowdry or styling.

She just wants it's dyed and a fringe trim

OP posts:
ioveelephants · 14/02/2025 20:53

A toner will blend the old bleach with her new highlights so she will have an all over one colour. X

NinnyNa · 14/02/2025 20:59

I just don't want to inconvenience them or have them annoyed at her. It's hard for her to do things like this.

I don’t think the hairdresser has done anything stressful here. I think you’re stressed because of your circumstances and have unrealistic expectations…

Simply: what you want will take more time than what you are booked in for.

You are assuming because your daughter doesn’t want styling, that the stylist will have more time to colour her hair.

  • Sometimes in salons a junior styles the hair - not the colourist. This may mean the colourist doesn’t have extra time, they may be with other clients.
  • If the colourist’s time is freed - it might not even be enough time for differences in the services.
  • Plus as her calendar is showing as empty the evening beforehand, she might rightfully be planning to use that time for those unbooked appointments elsewhere as opposed to having more time for clients.

I think the only way to safely give enough time is if you don’t get your hair done and give your appointment time to your daughter. You can get your hair done another day?

MJconfessions · 14/02/2025 21:04

Also I don’t recommend leaving the salon with wet hair after a colour change, you won’t be sure what the colour looks like until dry. What if your daughter gets home and doesn’t like her hair?

Then we will go back.

I messaged them on WhatsApp and they said its absolutely fine and they can accommodate anything she needs done tomorrow as they have the morning free and not to worry.

They're so nice!
