DD Chicken pox - should I vaccinate DS now?

Has anyone given the chicken pox vaccine to a sibling once one child already has spots? My DD started with them on Monday & I’ve read that if vaccinated 3-5 days after exposure that it can lessen the symptoms or even stop it completely.

DD (3.5) has it fairly mildly I would say & doesn’t seem bothered. But no idea how DS (1) will react. I’m due to start back at work in a week so could do without another full week of childcare to organise if / when the pox arrives for DS. I keep hearing that 2 weeks is the average gap between kiddies in the same house.

i can get DS vaccinated tomorrow afternoon.

TIA

Where did dd catch it from? Would he already have been exposed from the same source? I mean there's no harm, if you can afford it then the worst that happens is it doesn't work and he still gets it.

If they've been around each other then won't it be too late?

Purpledaysareus · 14/02/2025 07:22

Thank you @biscuitsandbooks I thought that too and DS has obviously been exposed but I’ve read somewhere that the vaccine might lessen symptoms if already been exposed if it doesn’t stop it completely. But not seen anywhere that this has actually worked

Yes, definitely worth a shot. But it would be a lot better to ring around a few places and beg for an appointment today given that tomorrow is 6 days after exposure

Oh I see what you mean so exposure might have been way before this week… we think she caught it at nursery as there have been a few confirmed cases but god knows. Might not be worth the cost…

They are infectious before the spots arrive so you need to take that into account too. I can’t remember how many days before though.

I did get the vaccine for my son the next day after he was exposed (when his cousin came to visit the day before coming out with spots) and his case was mild. He was 2
