Bathroom light and shower pulls ideas

puddleducktreble · 13/02/2025 14:41

We have 1 for each in our tiny bathroom. The string keeps snapping on both so they're getting shorter. They're always grubby looking too.

We're planning on redoing the bathroom and are wondering alternatives. Our electrician says we can't get the bathroom light outside due to wall space issues. We could probably get a wireless switch for the bathroom light.

The shower switch could be put outside the bathroom but up high so would need to be left on for practical reasons.

I'm interested to know how common bathroom light pulls are, and whether I should leave it as is but try and replace with something more robust/attractive?

Replace the string and then thread beads along the entire length to match the decor in the bathroom. That way the string stays clean and the beads can be wiped with a damp cloth when necessary.

You can replace the string with a small chain of the sort used for plug chains. I prefer external switches though, which is what I have in my current bathroom.

Could you have something like a PIR installed do that the lights come on automatically on entry and go off after exit ?

Replace the string with nylon cord.
Fit larger hand pulls (rather than little plasticy things).

You can also get pull wlswirches with dimmers which are quite good of you like a long bath

We still have a light pull, a shower pull and a heater pull in our main bathroom because that's the way the electrics were put in when the house was built. You can replace the cord, either with new cord or something else, but what worked for us was getting nice, long, stylish ends for the cord. I just got them from Amazon. Ours are a curved cone in chrome with a silicone ring to stop it chipping the wall paint. I like simplicity, but you can get fish shaped ones, wooden ones, all sorts.

The little plastic ends that come with the cords are total rubbish, in my opinion. You need something that is big enough to grab hold of so it is actually easier to hold that than the cord.

So - in summary. Get some new cords and get some nice cord ends. That should solve your problem.

I hate these!
We have one in the family bathroom, I replaced the cord with a black one as it was always getting manky which worked but now I feel it's just as manky but you can't tell which is probably worse. I fitted a brass pull thing but because it's heavy and the kids are rough on it, it swings around and has chipped loads of paint and caused big dents in the doorway.

Do an internet search for Crystal Light Pull , you will get some ideas and use a metal chain rather than a nylon cord.

puddleducktreble · 13/02/2025 19:54

I'm sure it's nylon that we have. We also have "fancy" pulls, so not the tiny plastic cones, but they're still shit frankly.

I'll have a look at what's been recommended.

I hear you! It's the swinging around and bashing everything, the grubbiness, and the snapping off. They don't have anything going for them.

I am very interested in this! We're replacing the shower with a bath and I cannot wait.

I considered this (especially as my kids have an aversion to switching the light back off) but I'd rather not have the lights come on in the middle of the night.

I think the cord just needs to be replaced, regularly, OP. You can wash it, of course, but as it costs about 16p to replace I used to do that every couple of months.

For the ring pull, I hate ones that are too gimmicky. I had one that was like a brushed nickel acorn: smart, understated, pleasingly heavy.

You don't need an expensive solution, cords are fine, just treat yourself to clean new ones.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 13/02/2025 23:52

I hear you OP,
we have them in the main bathroom x2 light & extractor
and also in my en-suite as well x 2 . I had them replaced few years ago when it broke and so far so good except once it got stuck on top of the storage unit and we couldn’t find it or see it until after a while 😂
