Is it possible to get to Cornwall on one full tank of petrol?

HappyChappieDappe · 13/02/2025 13:38

Specifics are, travelling from East Anglia to St Ives, Google maps says 329 miles, up to 5.5 hours drive.
Car is a relatively new Dacia Duster, full petrol capacity is just over 300 miles I think (never put a FULL tank in)
Is it doable? or will I need to fill up part way through? (Obviously will fill up on the way back)
Just want to get the logistics defined as will be travelling with a small child who will need a couple of comfort breaks.

My DH drives semi regularly from Kings Lynn to Falmouth. Yes, you can do it on one tank, but it takes closer to 8 hours

MrsMoastyToasty · 13/02/2025 16:49

If you're going via Bristol then come off at M5 Junction 17 (Cribbs Causeway) and head towards Asda or Morrisons. Cheapest petrol in the area.
(FWIW- we do Bristol to Glasgow on one tank of diesel in my Zafira, but it doesn't leave us much fuel for pottering around once we get there).

whatdoidonowffs · 13/02/2025 16:57

Good luck with 5.5 hrs
to my mum’s in looe it’s saying 4.5 hours that’s from Dartford with no stops or traffic
And 260 miles

Isobel201 · 13/02/2025 17:14

Yes you'll get the majority of the way there. I drove my Aygo from West Yorkshire to the top border of Cornwall, and she had some left, but I would have filled up just to be comfortable.

CarpetKnees · 13/02/2025 17:15

I'm intrigued as to why you would even think about not putting more fuel in on that journey.

From West of London (near Heathrow) the journey took us 7.5 hours last May. I think we have done it in 5, but you are much further away than we are.
Have a look for slightly off route petrol stations rather than paying extortionate Motorway prices.

This is pretty much exactly what I was about to say. I think I did it in 7 hours last time, including stopping for half an hour, also from West London.

If you are able to break your journey here for a meal/snack, it is truly fantastic: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g3654360-d24901289-Reviews-Sol_Bakery_Cafe-Chicklade_Wiltshire_England.html

Because there is absolutely no need, even with contingency factored in. Realistically it’s a 320 mile journey in a car with a 500 mile range, it wouldn’t even cross my mind to stop for fuel with such a large amount of headroom. There’s some serious anxiety going on here.

Printedword · 13/02/2025 18:19

I think it is as quick or quicker by train. If driving, there are other reasons for a stop other than to buy fuel. Not worth risking running out, plus it will be your first job the next day/ when you get there and you could be doing something more interesting

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 13/02/2025 18:22

I spent my 40th birthday in the car driving from Woolacombe to Kent, it took 14 hours. That was memorable.

Isn't Winchester out of your way?

I was about to ask this, surely you'll come off the M3 and head along the A303. Fleet or Bucks or Popham would be better

ChompandaGrazia · 13/02/2025 18:29

Why would you want to drive that far and long without stopping? Just get petrol.

I go from Suffolk to Dorset and that takes about 4 hours. An hour to the M25, an hour on the M25, an hour to the A303 then an hour to my folks.

violetcuriosity · 13/02/2025 18:33

I've driven from Ipswich to Porthtowan on one tank of petrol but the light was on when we got there 🤣

Movinghouseatlast · 13/02/2025 18:36

Why would you not fill up if you're going to stop anyway? I just don't get it!

This will be fine because you'll be going south which is downhill.

I always say this to my DH and he says that's rubbish and I'm an idiot.

I KNEW it was true!

Thank you!

pinklilys · 13/02/2025 20:13

My friend went from Surrey to North Devon....

9 hours. Seriously.

JohnofWessex · 08/04/2025 13:48

I've done Frome to Ayr several times in a Zafira and a Kia Carens

Both Diesel or to be pedantic Ackroyd Stuart

I dont think I needed to fill up but I didnt want to end up in an Ayrshire Pit Village on a Sunday morning with a tank of vapour.

Usually we stopped at Stafford out and Tebay back so I just topped the tank up as it wasnt too empty at that point so the cost of fuel there wasnt an issue

TimeforaGandT · 08/04/2025 14:03

I regularly do SW London to Penzance and 6 hours is a good run - one tank of petrol. If you're going on the A303 and not going early then you will sit in a queue to get past Stonehenge if it's school holidays.

Cumnock at 3 in he afternoon is bad enough, 3 in the morning 😱

Beebumble2 · 08/04/2025 14:14

Just a warning! Running on empty is very bad for your engine, the grot from the bottom of the tank will cause problems.

qwertyasdfgzxcv · 08/04/2025 14:16

I'm not sure but with a journey of that distance you will need to stop anyway

If you're travelling with DC, plan on the actual journey being a day trip and, rather than have pit stops at services, stop for a proper run around and break. There's a farm with soft play and loads of activities just off junc 22 of the M5 so we'd always stop there for two or three hours and then carry on. It gives you a proper chance to refresh and re-set too

Our favourite stop is always Sourton Cross Services (expensive fuel, Waitrose shop, transport caff in the car park across the road).

But...come out of the services, take the Tavistock road under the A30, and 100m down on your left is a turning signposted "Granite Way". Turn down there, bumpety- bump over the cattle grid, and just like that you're on Dartmoor.

lol.
I struggle to accept that all rivers don't flow South!

WonderingWanda · 08/04/2025 15:27

Google maps is currently suggesting 6hrs and 50 mins due to traffic. If you are travelling to Cornwall expect some traffic somewhere along the way. If you go down to the M4 /M5 you will hit traffic at Bristol and then again at Exeter if you hit rush hour. If you do A303 you could hit all sorts of issues. Currently across to Birmingham looking fastest.
Allow at least 6 hrs and stop at least twice. Have you ever driven that far with your little one in the car? I would go at their bedtime if I were you so they sleep for the journey.

Cumnock at 3 in he afternoon is bad enough, 3 in the morning 😱

It could be worse, I went to Ardrossan once.........

On the 1965 Ben My Cree from Liverpool via Douglas

Keir Hardie didnt make it out of Cumnock alive though

ERthree · 11/04/2025 10:17

The only thing Ardrossan has going for it is the view of Arran.
