Office in a cupboard- anyone done it?

(Posting here for traffic but also got a thread in property/diy)

Moving house soon. DH wfh 2 days a week- in our current home he's had a desk in our bedroom but there isn't really space for that in the new house. He could set up a desk area in the kitchen/dining room, but I'm concerned about general background noise, I don't want him (or me) having to stress about having an important phone call while the washing machine is on spin a few metres away or the DC are being rowdy in the next room.
There is a reasonably deep built in cupboard in our bedroom which extends above the staircase- would I be mad to try and turn it into some sort of office? I like the idea of just being able to shut the door on it, plus it would be much quieter upstairs. Have added pics of the sort of thing I had in mind... has anyone here done it? Is it easy to set up/comfy to work in?

I would hate that. No light, no room to move. Claustrophobic. What does he think?

Could you have a garden room installed?

I think that’s a good set up if you’re needing space to catch up on life admin or have an hour or two of desk based work, I don’t think I’d like to be sat there for hours at a time. Where is the cupboard in relation to windows for natural light?

SnowdaySewday · 13/02/2025 14:11

If there is space and natural light in the area immediately in front of the cupboard, it could work if you put the desk on castors. You could then pull it forwards when it is being used to avoid the claustrophobic feeling of being in a cupboard, and push it back when done and shut it out of sight.

I would have to have at least one of the doors folding right back against the wall. Sitting between the two open doors would be horribly claustrophobic

I have recently done this. I have a french door overlooking the gardens and trees behind my house ( the French doors lead to a large balcony/ patio) to the right about 50 cms away from the cupboard/ desk. As I have recently retired I only use this space for short periods but I don't think it would bother me that it looks onto blank walls in the cupboard.

It can work. You can overcome the doors issue by having a roller shutter or a drop down blind.

Light is key, so some good LED adjustable lighting for ambience plus task lighting. Shelf storage.
A fixed screen and docking station will make it more comfortable.

We had a similar set up during Covid and building work (thought not as fancy) But there was a window....I think all day might be a bit much - but if the set up is such that you can sit in there and turn round and it's light - it's probably fine....maybe get a daylight lamp.

rwalker · 13/02/2025 14:36

The green one is fine because your still in the room I would have so the doors open full back if possible if not lift off hinges
the other 2 are horrendous it’d be like working in a wardrobe

First photo is nice and wide and you sit outside the cupboard. The other two are v claustrophobic.

I had a desk in the breakfast room which is just the short bit of the L that is the kitchen/breakfast room. It didn't work for us at all. DH used to come in to make cups of tea, fill the dishwasher, put the shopping away etc. and he was just so noisy! If we had had the space to put it in a cupboard in the bedroom that would have worked much better.

AngeloMysterioso · 13/02/2025 18:20

This is the room/cupboard... not wide enough for a double door but the pull-out desk suggestion could probably work. The window in the bedroom is big and we could keep the bedroom door open as well. It's not such a deep cupboard that it would get super dark in there or anything.

What about one of those drop-down desks that attach to a wall or even the outside of the door of the cupboard or a fold up desk. The just store desk and chair etc. in the cupboard.
