Hemorrhoidectomy

Hey, I've been booked in for hemorrhoid surgery, I've got stage 4 hemorrhoids (External), I have had them since having my daughter, I've suffered with them for 17years, I've had lots of medications over the years and I went for banding 2 years ago, That hasn't helped if anything made it worse, I dread going to the toilet now so I just want them off, I've read lots of different stories about surgery, I've ordered a sitz bath for over the toilet, Squatty potty & a pressure cushion, Is there anything else you think I'll need? I haven't got my surgery date yet as I'm on a waiting list they said up to 3months but could be sooner, I got my letter today that they've sent to my Dr's to advise that they are finally going ahead with the hemorrhoidectomy. Any tips is much appreciated, I'm nervous but I've had them that long I now want rid they've caused me enough pain over the years, Could anyone please give me some experience on managing pain, My Dr said it is a very painful recovery so I am thinking about the worst. Thank you in advance

No experience, but from what I’ve read you’ll need lots of painkillers and laxatives. Try to keep your stools loose, try not to get constipated and then have to do something about it.
Epsom salts for the site bath , but plain ones, not fragranced.
Good luck

Thank you very much, Yeah they provide you with laxatives after the surgery.

Hi @Danilou90 ive also got grade 4 external hems. Currently sat in the bath trying to soothe them as my period is due and they seem to flare up just before.

My GP referred me for surgery in January but I’ve had nothing through from the hospital yet. Did you hear pretty quickly?

I am also dreading surgery but can’t live like this. I’m going to meal prep so I have lots of high fibre meals in the freezer, and book my dogs into kennels for a week after surgery.

I have a sitz bath for the top of the toilet and I poo into very hot water to ease the pain currently. I will also buy in lots of salts for salts baths, and run that while I’m on the loo so I can jump straight in.

I bought a product called Wype that you squirt on your toilet paper to help with the cleaning.

I’ve had to stop using any creams as they’ve made my skin really dry and itchy and think I also got a UTI.

it’s bloody miserable.

Hey, I was referred again in September 2024 and had the referral in February, It does take a while before I was waiting over 3years for the banding but as I've already had the banding they've pushed for surgery, I haven't heard when I'm having the surgery they said up to 3months maybe sooner depends if they have a cancellation, Have you already been to see the colerectal team? If not then you'll see them first and they'll decide weather to try the banding first but it made mine worse tbh with you, Hopefully you get an appointment soon.

Hi @Danilou90 not seen the colorectal team yet. Ugh ok that sounds rubbish. I don’t want to go through it all multiple times. I hope you hear soon.

Download the NHS APP and you should be able to see you're referral that the Dr's made and it should tell you how long the waiting list, Hopefully you get in soon, Best of luck!

Ah thanks I didn’t think to check the app. I’ve just looked and it says I’ve been referred for banding and it will be reviewed at the end of March.
