Recurring dreams - do you have them and do you analyse them?

I know people have recurring dreams - but curious what they are?

I have a few but the main ones are:

Being caught in my old house that I sold, I keep sneaking in, have a spare key, always nearly get caught in there by current owner, there's never any furniture in it but boxes

Toilets overflowing - normally sh*t, in a public bathroom, every toilet cubicle is overflowing and its all over the floors

A little boy calling me mummy, so vivid I remember his face, I ask why he is calling me mummy when I don't know who he belongs to and get told he is my son (this one really gets to me as I lost a baby 12 years ago at 13 weeks)

Being chased around a field by a VW Beetle pretending to be a shark (weird I know)

Was watching the Simpsons the other day and it revolved around Lisa’s dream journal. I actually thought hmm, not a bad idea!!!

ps sorry to hear about your loss x

I have a few - some exactly the same all the time and others vary. I always dream that I go back to the family home I grew up in - it was sold many years ago now but it makes me happy being around my DM who is no longer with us. Another one I had frequently for many years and it was that my DS had another baby which I could never understand as she had her children and was unable to have any more I just could not understand this dream but then a couple of years ago she adopted a baby completely out of the blue even though it wasn't something she ever planned - I haven't had that dream since! I also dream that I buy a huge mansion type house and in my dream I can see every single detail of this house it is so vivid but I feel uneasy in this house, I dont really like being there

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/02/2025 10:13

I have a few occasionally recurrent ones - the exam one, always German literature for some reason. The exam is imminent, and not only have I not read any of the books, I don’t even know what they are! Goodness knows why it’s always German - I got a perfectly respectable A level grade.

Another is Christmas shopping - it’s nearly 4 pm on Christmas Eve and I’ve forgotten to buy any presents, a tree, everything. I do know exactly what this dates back to though.

Then there’s the dinner party one - it’s nearly 11 pm and the potatoes still aren’t cooked! I don’t understand this one either - not that we do them any more, but when we did, there were no disasters.

Then there’s the one about the house I know very well, but I know I’ve never even seen in RL. That one’s a mystery!

This too - there is a large house, like a mansion, im ok in it until i go into one of the spare rooms and there is a massive bathroom and all like old and one dark colour and its not like its haunted but I can feel the evil in the house. There is another bedroom and en suite in a different colour which makes me feel exactly the same, I wake up before i can get out

Sorry for the loss of your DM

My exam recurring dream is always A Level History and I haven't got a clue - in real life I got a respectable C.

Another recurring dream is that I have extra rooms in my house that I didn't think I had. One particularly sweet one was with my recently departed DM. We found a room full of treasures, fabulous clothes and jewellery - both of us were younger. I did tell her about it and she loved it.

Finally, the stress/anxiety dream that involves me having to get somewhere important and always forgetting my phone/handbag/passport and when they were younger, children!

placemats · 13/02/2025 12:30

@31stJune1973 Oh I'm off to have a look.

Regarding my stress/anxiety dreams, I now in my dreams tell myself that this is just one of those dreams and you need to wake up now!

PeterPipper · 13/02/2025 12:40

The only recurring dream I have is searching for a loo. This is when I wake up and realise I need a wee.

NordicwithTeen · 13/02/2025 12:46

When I was 6 I was sent to board due to my mum being an alcoholic/divorce/dom abuse from my dad, etc. I had recurring nightmares that my mum was trapped and I couldn't get to her (always in the same place which used to be a holiday resort we went to regularly) and she was drowning with the water slowly rising until I was with my head sideways on the ceiling swimming to try to get her out but not being able to breathe. I still feel the stress of it now typing it out! Obviously it was about my mum being alone at home and I was worrying about her drinking and felt responsible. She had a breakdown so I guess that was the drowning imagery.

Chaiii · 13/02/2025 12:47

I have 2 recurring dreams, one is where I'm in a public toilet and there are loads of cubicles, like loads, some have doors and some don't, and all the toilets are dirty or overflowing and it's revolting, I don't like this dream!
My other dream is being lost in a concrete multi storey car park where there might be people I'd want to avoid, or I'm confused how to get out or where I am.
I've looked these up before and I think it's to do with stress and stuff I internalise, ahhh!

MagpiePi · 13/02/2025 12:50

I have the one about trying to find a toilet but they are all disgusting and blocked, and I read somewhere that it because you need a wee but it is a way of stopping you wetting the bed - like @PeterPipper says.

I also have the one about being in a familiar house and finding extra rooms. No idea what that means!

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 13/02/2025 13:20

@Chaiii @MagpiePi

It's weird the public toilets all cubicles all blocked and overflowing with excrement.

Dreaming of a public toilet where all the cubicles are blocked and overflowing with excrement often symbolizes a feeling of being overwhelmed by negative emotions, repressed thoughts, or issues you feel unable to express or deal with effectively, potentially signifying a sense of being stuck or unable to "let go" of burdens in your waking life - this definitely resonates with me.

I have the extra rooms one and often dream about previous houses. They rarely look the same but one house in particular still somehow has things that belonged to us, like DS1’s bottles, he’s late 20’s now 😁

My most frequent dream is getting on the wrong train then being totally unable to retrace my steps.

Sorry about your loss OP.

I have a recurring dream which is more is a recurring theme really. I am lost in places that is have been to IRL but don’t know very well. I can’t get out of this place and all transport is stopped/inaccessible. There is one route where I can see somewhere I know at the other end but there is a gang of men blocking the way and then I usually wake up.

I have that one quite regularly but a lot of my dreams tend to be about being lost.

Your Christmas shopping and meal not ready by 11pm dream, I also have these exact ones. The one where the meal isn’t ready, not only is it not ready but more and more people keep turning up until I have to get extra tables and there is about 40 people - and I only have 4 wine glasses! I spend the dream running around looking for more glasses while everybody is sitting getting annoyed it is so late and they haven’t eaten.

PubicZirconia · 13/02/2025 14:03

I have two recurring dreams and they are beyond basic 🤣

Heights - being stuck on the edge of a building/ledge/hill and being forced to climb.

Out of control car - I don't drive due to numerous car accidents (including one on the way to a driving lesson, another pulling my then baby out of a car filled with smoke). This charming dream involves me having to try and drive downhill and I don't know which pedals to use.

Bestbefore2030 · 13/02/2025 14:13

I have a dream that I've sneaked back into my old house and I'm snooping around. Then the new owners pull into the drive and I'm panicking how to get out/explain why I'm there.

Another one is trying to find a toilet with a door, or the cubicle only comes up about 3 feet and everyone can see in.

That I'm walking around with not many clothes on and trying to hide my nakedness.

Water cutting off my path or a tidal wave.

I could go on but suffice to say I'm one crazy mixed up kid!

Crikeyalmighty · 13/02/2025 14:18

I have lots recurrently that my ex H appears in and we've been divorced 33 years !!

HollyBerryz · 13/02/2025 14:24

Sometimes but not at the moment. I have very vivid dreams at times that can leave me feeling quite strange. I do try and figure them out but some are so strange it feels impossible. My most recent ones were:

struggling to walk as my legs were so heavy. But I didn't want anyone to notice so would desperately try and hide it (I suspect I feel a bit stuck in life but I rarely voice this as it's due to being a carer and not the fault of the person I care for. I feel guilty about complaining about not having more in my life like a career etc even though I'd really like this).

The other one I never figured out. I'd be staying somewhere and would need to get home, but I'd keep missing the transport so would say I'd go the next day and the same thing would happen. Or I'd have too much stuff to take with me and get very distressed about leaving anything behind. One day I couldn't fit it all in my car to get home. Another time we were moving and it wouldn't all fit in the truck and if I didn't take these things we'd lose them forever.

driftingintheair · 13/02/2025 14:34

I had two reoccurring dreams:

I am originally from a long-haul distance country and estranged from late DM who lived there. When she was alive I had dreams for quite a few years that I had returned for a visit but once there discovered I didn’t have a return plane ticket to the UK. I found I had almost no money with me and none in the bank back ‘home’ in the UK. I calculated that I would have to work for two years to save enough money for a return plane ticket and without fail I would wake up either crying or feeling very distraught. DM died last year and the dreams have stopped so far. I think in this instance my subconscious was trying to tell me something.

The other dream was that I was flying (like Superman!) over my primary school that I left aged about 8 in 1983, but the school was like inside a dome so there was a roof over me as I flew over and around the school grounds. I had that dream for many years and no idea why - I had no special affinity to that school.

Ohh, I was going to recommend "This Jungian Life", podcast by three jungian analists. They focus a lot on dreams (they even have a kind of dream interpretation course).
It's a truly fascinating topic.

MagpiePi · 13/02/2025 14:40

@driftingintheair I used to have flying like superman dreams, usually over where I live now. I always felt a bit sad when I woke up that I wasn't able to just lift off the ground and go swooping around.
My Mum reckoned that flying dreams were something to do with having a good sex life - no wonder I don't have them now!!

I have these dreams too where in my dream I am desperate for the loo but I can't find the toilets no matter how hard I look or if I do find a toilet there is no door on the toilet cubicle or someone is waiting outside and I can't go - when I wake I am desperate for a wee!
