Looking for advice on what to say to my Occupational Health consultant tomorrow.

I've asked for a work laptop now for ten months. I get migraines from the building I work in from sick building syndrome. The head consultant I work with wrote me a letter to get a laptop but I need to ask the occ health doc too.. how do I persuade him ? I work in the building causing it 4 days a week unfortunately.

My managers have been useless.

It sounds like you're in a difficult situation, especially if you've already been dealing with health issues related to your work environment for an extended period and have faced lack of support. Here's how you could approach the Occupational Health consultant to strengthen your case:

Start with a Clear Overview of the Situation

  • Explain your medical condition (migraines related to sick building syndrome), and its impact on your ability to work effectively. Be clear about how this condition has worsened due to the building environment and your current working conditions.
  • Mention the letter from your head consultant as supporting evidence. If possible, bring a copy with you, along with any medical documentation that details the severity of the migraines and how they relate to your workspace.

Highlight the Specific Request (Work Laptop)

  • State your request for a laptop directly, explaining how this would mitigate the negative effects of working in the building. For example, explain that working remotely or with flexible mobility could help you avoid triggers (such as air quality issues, lighting, or other environmental factors) that exacerbate your condition.
  • Clarify the necessity of the laptop in your role, emphasizing how it would enhance your productivity and ability to carry out your duties efficiently without compromising your health.

Discuss the Impact of the Issue

  • Focus on the tangible effects on your work performance. For instance, explain how frequent migraines affect your concentration, your ability to engage with colleagues or clients, or how they impact your attendance or the quality of your work.
  • Be honest about the challenges you're facing: persistent migraines, increasing frequency, and the toll it takes on your physical and mental health.

Mention the Lack of Support from Management

  • Without sounding overly negative, you can politely mention that management has not been responsive to your concerns and that, despite the doctor's letter, you have not received the necessary accommodations.
  • This can help the Occupational Health consultant understand that you've already tried other avenues to resolve the issue without success.

Express Willingness to Find a Solution

  • Be open to suggestions: state that you're seeking a solution that will allow you to work more effectively while addressing your health needs. The consultant may have other suggestions or accommodations in mind.

Here’s a potential structure for the conversation:

"Thank you for meeting with me today. I’m seeking your advice and support regarding my ongoing health issues, particularly migraines linked to the sick building syndrome in my workplace. I’ve been working in the building four days a week, and the environmental factors there have significantly worsened my condition. Despite seeking support from management and a letter from my head consultant to request a work laptop, my symptoms have continued to affect my ability to work effectively.

I believe a laptop would allow me to work remotely, avoid some of the triggers, and perform my duties more effectively. However, as management has not been able to provide the necessary accommodations, I’d really appreciate your guidance on how we can proceed and if you can support this request as well."

I don't understand how having a laptop would help?
Having just read the HSE & NHS info on SBS surely there would need to be others having problems too, you can't just decide there are issues with the building with no evidence anyone else has a problem

I only get the migraine in the building and would WFH and not be there.

So two requests - firstly to have a laptop and secondly to then work from home rather than being in the office.

Where does your employer stand on WFH?

Geneticsbunny · 13/02/2025 08:46

I think you might mean thanks chatgpt rather than cupcake but either way, could be helpful advice.
