High level administration managers in organisations - egocentric?

Do you think that some people go into these jobs not really to make a difference, do a good job or make positive changes to the company or organisation, but just to be able to (for want of a better word) boss people around and inflate their own ego? Obviously not all but some do I'm sure. I've sat in on meetings with chief operating officers positively gleeful about restructures and it made me think.

Sure, work isn't an altruistic activity. if you think you are good at managing things, overseeing operations etc and you enjoy it, that is why you take the job. Not because you think ou're going to be making great changes. The great changes are a sign that you ARE good at the job.

I mean, you can also genuinely be happy and pleased that you're able to improve things too, I just don't think that's the intrinsic reason people enjoy those jobs.

I worked with an ex Army COO once. He genuinely was pleased he could dmake the operation work better, meet its people's needs better etc, but I think deep down he was constantly just a bit surprised that he even needed to do it because to him it all just seemed so obvious. Grin
