Soft food diet advice

Zssn · 12/02/2025 13:09

Hello all,

I hope you are well.

Due to medical reasons, I have been informed that I require a soft good diet for 2 months or so, and slowly reintroduce solid food after that. Has anyone gone through this? How are energy levels ? Or any advice? As I truly loved eating apples , but unfortunately cannot for a while; plus I'm a mum which requires tonnes of energy.

Thank you kindly in advance

Have they not offered you advice if this is for medical reasons?
i would want some guidance and advice from whoever is recommending the diet, rather than random internet advice

wherearemypastnames · 12/02/2025 13:52

I can imagine it being boring but perfectly possible to get enough to keep energy levels up - mashed potatoes would be classed as soft ( you say soft not liquid) - so mince mash , mashed root veg , and gravy ; most fish would be soft - in a creamy sauce

Stew the apples ?

Get a stick blender for making soup and make stews and curries soft and smooth ?

Are you having surgery? Is it on the jaw, dental? If so the advice is a high protein diet while making sure you get the nutrients you need. Smoothies made with fruit and veg, protein shakes with milk, soup, custards, protein yogurts etc. For the first couple of weeks then gradually add in pasta, soft cooked meat, slow cooker great for stews and things. Mash veg, potatoes etc

Hello,

Thank you- just it's difficult as I am someone that eats a lot of hard and crispy things. The stewed apples is something I definitely will try , never thought if that, only thought about apple smoothies.

Not one for a creamy sauce , which is unfortunate as lack of calcium as a child has placed my bones, teeth and jaw in much health predicaments

Thank you

Hello,

Thank you for your advice.

It is bone , teeth and jaw that has weakened in density over many years of not consuming enough calcium /protein as a child. This has been just me not enjoying milk, cheeses, meats ect... so I have to have jaw and tooth surgery to build it up , along with calcium injected into bones , along with some intravenous medication not all allowed to be administered with any solid food.

I may try powdered protein, shakes, as I have never had it before.

Thank you for the suggestion

The protein powder can be mixed with milk, water or things like yogurts. Protein along with calcium is very important for recovery and healing from the kind of surgery that you are having

I had jaw surgery and blended everything I would normally eat! So breakfast was toast, peanut butter and black tea all blended together - actually really nice. Same for lunch and dinner! Stewed fruit is great.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 12/02/2025 15:03

I sometimes have a preference for soft/ liquid foods due to nausea.

Frozen fruit blended with milk of choice plus a protein powder.
Miso soup- not the sachets but proper miso. Add a spoonful to hot (not boiling water) and stir. Silken tofu could be added which is traditional and naturally extremely soft.
And of course all the soups. Some Spanish and Italian soups have bread blended into them which makes them more substantial.
Yoghurt.
Very soft mash with a nice sauce on top.
Porridge
Polenta
Congee (a savoury rice soup, rice is boiled in stock with meat or other things until it is all broken down to a Porridge consistency)
Bovril
Steam vegetables (not boil!) Until soft enough to press with a finger.
Could buy some of the weaning pouches. There's so so many nowadays and some are really tasty! I knew someone who worked on a building site and he liked them because they were long life and he was going through dental surgery. Sweet be fine straight from the pouch, savoury you may want to warm up and add to something else plus a bit of seasoning.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 12/02/2025 15:06

If you love apples most of the weaning pouches seem to have apple in them, loads of nice combinations. I tend to finish off what my baby doesn't eat 😂. As we only use them if out and about so not near a fridge to store.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 12/02/2025 15:08

Egg drop soup- plenty of protein in there

Sajacas · 12/02/2025 15:18

Bone broth, bone marrow and pureed liver.

Hello,

Thank you for your advice.

Sorry you had that.

I may try to blend everything I eat too- but the thought of it also make my stomach churn. Needs must I suppose

You may have seen it by its more familiar Chinese restaurant/ takeaway name "chicken and sweetcorn soup" but they are slightly different 🙂
