Would you report someone for benefit fraud?

Hypothetical question, I’m not in this situation.

Just curious:

Report them, they deserve everything coming

or

Don’t be a grass?

Depends.

I claim UC
Just about everyone I know also claims because of low incomes, high housing costs and childcare etc.

If some shit heap had £££ in the bank and still claimed to be on their arse and wanted UC to pay for their lifestyle, nah nah fuck that, I'd report them in seconds and hope they get bent over and reamed out by the DWp and courts.

If a couple also lived together but claimed separately... Or bought a council house they didn't live in full time because their partner had a nicer house just round the corner etc.
That's Fraud. Reported.

To some people, it tars all claimants with the same brush, and I don't like that.

@iwentjasonwaterfalls of course we'll never know for certain, although I don't see why anyone would lie about fraudulently claiming benefits?! It's not exactly something to boast about, especially if they're not telling the truth.

@MsPavlichenko it's not vile, it's her job.

Fraud is vile.

Tvp123 · 11/02/2025 23:48

Depends on the circumstances.

PandaTime · 11/02/2025 23:48

Depends if I like them or not.

This and if people know how much fraud happened during the pandemic you'd be shocked. Also some vile human being trafficked people to claim benefit. You still want to face the other way?

LBFseBrom · 11/02/2025 23:53

Never.

OnlyTheBravest · 11/02/2025 23:55

Do I know people who commit fraud? Yes but the majority are just about treading water. I would not report them to make their lives more miserable.

However I do know a couple of people who were caught committing benefit fraud, and they were taking absolute liberties. It was greed pure and simple and they received a prison sentence.

Millionaires and Billionaires don’t make the contributions they should . Is that the same as folk earning cash in hand to buy trainers for their kids? Not a rhetorical question .

RubyRedBow · 11/02/2025 23:58

Somebody very close to me is a benefit cheat but I can’t and won’t report them. Only a handful of us know but I do worry a random review will catch them out anyway.

Toddlerhelpplease123 · 11/02/2025 23:59

No, but I wouldnt associate or be friends with them.

SouthLondonMum22 · 12/02/2025 00:00

I wouldn't even consider it.

Should I be allowed to pocket cash from the tills at work?
Fraud is vile behaviour and people should be called out for it.

@MsPavlichenko
I think fraudulent millionaires or billionaires should be reported too.

DoItBetter · 12/02/2025 00:04

Yes I would report it. It's theft.

makemeanoffericantrefuse · 12/02/2025 00:06

I'm a higher rate tax payer, not saying this to brag but as I pay a lot of tax I would like it to go to people who genuinely need it.
Absolutely not for it to go to fraudsters.

RubyRedBow · 12/02/2025 00:07

Mademetoxic · 12/02/2025 00:01

My worry is the kids who will likely suffer when the inevitable happens.
In this case I think they claim to get by as their partner very much sees his wages as his money but that’s a whole other problem.

BeforeTheFall · 12/02/2025 00:08

The only reporting I’m doing is anyone drink or drug driving, domestic violence, or for safeguarding reasons. I’m not about to dob in Brenda down the road whose done some cleaning cash in hand to afford her gas bill.

HeddaGarbled · 12/02/2025 00:08

Probably not.

Maybe the kids are better off without their parents.

I would be ashamed if I grew up knowing my parents committed fraud. I would walk away and never see them again as an adult and go no contact.

DragonFly98 · 12/02/2025 00:14

Nope.

DragonFly98 · 12/02/2025 00:31

We live in a society where my dh could stuff extra money in his pension and claim tax payers money , tax payers who earn far less than he does. And that is not only legal but encouraged. He could claim £76.90 a week for 2 children receiving tax free childcare. Money he is not entitled to based on his earnings.
If a single mum on UC works in a pub one evening a week cash in hand earning £50 a week meaning they are claiming £27.50 more a week than they are entitled to. That is illegal and benefit fraud. An income difference of say £105k but only one is a “thieving fraudster”
That is why I would never report benefit fraud.

OneLoyalGreyFish · 12/02/2025 00:59

No, I wouldn’t.

30+ years ago my now ex husband was out of work and we claimed benefits. Got a knock at the door one day, people from DSS saying they’d had someone report him for working as a butcher - he was a bricklayer! He was asked if he’d done any building work for anyone and he truthfully said he’d built a couple of walls for a porch his brother was getting, obviously for free as it was a favour for his brother. He was royally told off but that was the end of the matter. We never did find out who’d rang them, but for quite a few months I suspected everyone we knew, it was awful.

Celia24 · 12/02/2025 01:01

No because I’m not a pathetic loser. If you’re looking for someone to blame look at Elon Musk, etc.
