Skiing - mobile phon

My son is going on a ski trip with the school next week to Italy . The school encourages them to take phones with them due to the distance of the journey (we live up north and they are travelling to Dolomites by coach).

Is there anything you can buy that prevents the phone being dropped off a ski lift? Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m guessing some sort of phone bungy cable.

I’m really suffering with peri brain fog at present and whenever I Google it, I get pictures of water proof cases. I can’t see how that would attach to him and I don’t see how you use the phone inside the case either.

And yes, I will suggest he doesn’t take the phone out with him during the day. But I won’t be there to enforce that.

Thank you

Phone lanyard case from Amazon

The waterproof cases usually have a neck strap,

You can use the phone through the case but it is not easy.

A lanyard is probably a better solution

He needs to keep his phone in his pocket and only take it out where safe to use it, ie not on a chairlift! A lanyard is dangerous as it could get caught on the lift safety bar.

It’s absolutely fine to take it out, indeed it’s important for safety reasons. A pocket is all he needs.

You can’t use a phone on a lift anyway as you’ll have thick gloves on.

It’s a stupid idea to use a phone on a chairlift. You have to take your glove off to use it and then hold your poles between your legs so even if the phone is on some sort of strap you’re risking a dropped pole or glove and you may not always be able to ski where you need to retrieve it. He should take it out skiing with him though- it’s important for safety reasons in case he becomes separated from the group and/or if he needs to call mountain patrol for assistance- he should also take note that the number is on the back of the lift pass. But keep it in his inside pocket so no risk of it falling out and never check it on a chairlift! Inside a gondola or funicular would be fine though.

I really would not encourage him to have a lanyard around his neck, given he will probably fall over at some point.

Look at his ski jacket. They often have a loop inside the pocket to attach things to.

Then use a phone case on a lanyard (or some sort of cord + clip) to fix it into pocket.

HotCrossBunplease · 11/02/2025 11:37

I wouldn’t advise that @MidnightPatrol . It will just tempt him to try to get the phone out on a lift, then the cord could get tangled and/or as the pp above said, he’ll drop his pole or gloves.

All he needs to do is put it in his pocket and only get it out where it is safe to do so (for both him and the phone). Same as he does in everyday life when not on skis, eg you don’t hold your phone over the edge of a bridge or a train platform!

I would always want them to have phone with them in case of an emergency int he slopes. But you normally keep it in your inside pocket of jacket. This will keep it from getting too cold which drops battery power

Just don’t use on chair lift. Always at bottom or top. You don’t want any type of string or lanyard as it could get caught on something ie other persons ski poles getting of lift and cause accidents

For info, depending on the age of phone/battery & temperature, the phone will discharge faster than normal.
Is he a beginner? he may not even get on a chair lift !
