Instant mash question

I fancy some mashed potato. Didn’t know that the pack has sachets in them. A sachet makes 500g. I am on own. No way i can eat that amount. If I use half a pack and put a food clip on it, how long can I keep the rest of the sachet for?

i don’t make proper mash as no point making that small amount and it’s always lumpy

It should be fine for a week or two I guess. You could put it in the freezer if you wanted to extend its shelf life. My friend used to make Smash in a mug and eat it with Bisto. Student days were the best!

If it's just powder I would imagine it will keep a while, not sure about freezing powder though?

What kind is it?

Jeansandfleece · 10/02/2025 18:54

For the future-frozen mash is nice and you can just use as many pellets as you want.
My kids prefer it to proper mash but there’s no crap in it.

If its just you, then surely you just use 1-2 potatoes and make less mash? If its lumpy, I suspect you aren't cooking the potatoes long enough to make them smooth.

Have you ever tasted that smash stuff before? I tried it 20yrs ago and recall it being a bit salty.

Bjorkdidit · 10/02/2025 19:09

To answer your question about the sachet, it's fine for months, that's kind of the point of dried food.

A ricer will make lump free mash.

However, I'm now considering ready made mash, either fresh or frozen, because Sainsbury's own brand instant, that was actually quite nice, has changed from powder to flakes and is now horrible.

Buy frozen,

Comes in small lumps so you can choose the amount.

I buy the Idahoan instant potato sachets sometimes, I make up the whole packet and freeze what I don't use.

Meecrowahvey · 10/02/2025 19:17

Smash used to be sold in tubs and would last a couple of months once opened.

I use this instant mash powder too, and have frozen both the made-up mash and half the powder and it keeps well. Their cheesy mash is nice too.

I've done that a few times with packets of dry; you can tape it shut securely or put in a air-tight container. It's dry and if tightly closed, not exposed to light, heat, moisture or air, should keep very well till next time you need it.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 10/02/2025 19:25

I like the Idaho packet mash. I just tape the packet back up again and put what I haven't used back in the pantry - it's certainly fine after a few weeks.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 10/02/2025 19:28

In terms of making your own - you can just freeze what you don't eat. I use a normal potato masher and it's never lumpy - but if you are adding milk to it you need to warm the milk up first.

I don’t usually have space for frozen vegs in freezer. Just have a fridge freezer freezer with 3 drawers and a top flap thing

The box of mash I bought last year has 4 sachets. I thought it was loose.

Tip - put some dried mustard powder and cheese granules in. Boom!

I've tried the Idaho cheesy mash and often put grated cheese into fresh mash - but what in earth are cheese granules ?
