Frostbite from frozen peas?

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 10/02/2025 17:51

Ok dramatic title I know. I fell right down the stairs today, landing mostly on the side of my thigh. Huge bruise. Immediately applied a pack of frozen peas and left it there... for 2hrs.

Just googled how long a bruise should be iced and its 20mins max... more than that can lead to tissue damage..

Has anyone accidentally left an ice pack on for 2hrs?? Any noticeable damage?

Currently defrosting myself, feeling stupid.

Wouldn't the peas have defrosted in that time?

dementedpixie · 10/02/2025 17:54

The peas would have defrosted so you will not be getting frostbite

MumChp · 10/02/2025 17:54

Don't worry about it.

Nah, you're good and most tissue damage is visible.

Hope you feel better soon.

Its fine, tissue damage would only happen if you had been repeatedly replacing the ice
For the majoity of that time there would not have been ice in contact with your leg, just peas.

Thanks for talking some sense into me! Pretty discombobulated by the fall

This is one of the maddest questions I've ever seen on MN! and I love you for it OP. It really made me giggle

You'd be able to feel it if you had frozen yourself.

I once managed to freeze the back of my neck with an icepack, there was a big lump of flesh that felt totally solid, like a frozen chicken breast. Scared me shitless!

I somehow got away with it scot free, but NHS 111 told me that I'd basically burned myself, the same as you do with heat, and to expect quite a bit of pain and some skin loss from the area.

You might have a wee superficial burn from over Icing but you’ll be ok on the frostbite front.

ChocHotolate · 10/02/2025 19:20

Cold can burn in the same way heat can. Watch out for any blistering

NannyR · 10/02/2025 19:22

For future reference, it's advised to wrap the icepack/frozen peas in a towel before applying to skin to prevent cold injury.

Wow that's impressive (and terrifying)! Luckily my thigh has not turned into a frozen chicken thigh. I think I'll be alright
