Dd16 period related episode - endo?

User7288339 · 10/02/2025 15:40

Sorry, posting here for traffic as women's health was quiet

Dd16 is on first full day of her period.
Period cramps worse than usual and period a bit heavier than usual she said.

Started feeling a bit unwell at college and decided she'd come home.

Then it quite quickly escalated to the worst pain she'd ever felt, doubled over, burning pain she said. In lower abdomen. She also felt nauseous, dizzy and hearing went briefly. Felt tingly.
She said she thought her uterus might be exploding!

It passed and now she feels much better but with still slightly worse than normal period cramps.

I will make a GP appointment but wondered if anyone has had experience of similar?
She's naturally very worried about it happening again.
Any tips on what I should be expecting from the GP? A scan referral for example?

If your GP is anything like mine I wouldn't expect much to be honest. But if you can then ask for a referral to gynaecology, for scans ect, I have endometriosis and it took me years to get a diagnosis, I've been waiting 9 months for a referral to an endometriosis specialist. Endo can't be diagnosed via scans only laparoscopy for definite. If severe it can sometimes be seen on a mri but not always.

Do you think her symptoms sound like it could be the start of that?

Three years I've been attending gp with my daughters similar symptoms before we were referred for a scan and gyne.

Christwosheds · 10/02/2025 16:09

Ovarian cyst is another possibility. Can you afford a private scan ?

Manchesterbythesea · 10/02/2025 16:11

My dd24 has similar symptoms every month to the point where she passes out. Has been diagnosed with Adenomyosis. 😕

Lja100 · 10/02/2025 16:12

Quite possibly, my periods have always been horrendous and very irregular but I also have Pcos, only mild period pain is normal, anything beyond a few cramps isn't no matter how much the doctors tell you it's normal, it isn't. If you can afford a private appointment I'd do that. There's pages on instagram and Facebook that may help more

If her periods are otherwise normal and this has been an isolated incident I’d be inclined to watch and wait. DD had a similarly awful period around that age with the same symptoms as your DD but it never happened again (thank goodness!)

User7288339 · 10/02/2025 16:18

Thanks all
Yes hopefully it won't happen again but if we can get her checked it would be good.

I think my xH, her dad, might have private insurance that covers her too so that might help.

It's horrible how many people have had to wait so long to be taken seriously

This time in 2 months time she will be abroad on a school trip so that's an additional worry!

Sorry to hear that—dealing with this can be so exhausting. I have official diagnosis for endometriosis, and my period pain is unbearable, like someone is tearing me apart from the inside. I’ve had countless scans (both internal and external), check-ups—you name it. Unfortunately, diagnosing endometriosis properly requires keyhole surgery (laparoscopy), as that’s the gold standard. It’s extremely rare for endometriosis to show up on an ultrasound unless it’s very severe.

In my case, I eventually got diagnosed privately because the NHS process was just too slow and unreliable. If you’re looking for answers and want to rule out endometriosis, I wouldn’t put too much hope in the NHS—you’d likely have better luck going private. I got diagnosed at 27.

My dd had exactly the same almost 3 years ago when she was 17, even down to the hearing loss. I called 111 as she was in such agony but it passed after half hour and hasn’t ever happened again.
i was keeping an eye on her as I’ve had to have a total hysterectomy due to endo but it took multiple surgeries, scans and treatments before I happened to find a professor at my local hospital who specialised in endo. Pretty much immediately he booked me in for surgery. It’s a long process to get a diagnosis unfortunately. I hope your dd is ok now.

Thank you
That's really interesting to hear there was something similar for your dd but thankfully didn't reoccur. Hoping that's the same here.

She is better now but still tender and bloated and period pain but at the more normal level.

I asked about bowel movements and she said it was painful when she went this morning, but it often is during her period and she thought that was normal - but I don't get that. Another symptom to mention to the doc as see online that can be a sign of other things 😞

My dd said it was very painful when she had a bowel movement but I think it was due to the severity of the pain at the time. Normally she’s ok.
I really hope it’s just a one off for your dd, it was terrifying when mine said she couldn’t hear me. She was extremely anxious on her next few periods but I think that’s to be expected.

Well as an initial thing in response to my e-consult form the GP has prescribed mefanamic acid to take when the periods are painful.
So I guess that might help dd to know there's something if next month is bad too.
She's not had a recurrence of the agonising pain but is just continuing to have slightly worse period cramps than usual.

Can't hurt to try but did nothing for my DD.
My Dd has Endo (we think) but she had severe periods from the start when she was 12 so the fact that this is the first occurence for your DD at 16 despite previous periods could do with looking into.
Good luck, we only got any real help when we paid for a Private Gynae for DD when she was 17
