Do you do extra work with your DC?

I’m especially interested to know about DC in selective schools. If school says, for example, that the kids have a French test and sends home a list of 150 words for them to learn, but claims that they should only be spending 10 minutes on it, do you get the kids to only spend ten minutes on it, or do you get them to work until they’ve learned the words?

With DD’s school, it all feels a bit “Do as I say, not as I do.” We have spoken to the school about the homework load but they’re not interested. I have historically tried to get her to learn the lot but she’s working until far too late at night for an 11 year old and I feel the homework time expectations (and in particular, the revision time expectations) are too high for Y6. We’ve this morning said to DD that we’re not going to make her do any more than the official ten minutes, but that if she chooses to, and wants us to test her etc, then we will be happy to help her. What do other people do in these situations?

DD (Yr 8 in independent school) has 2 x slots of 30 mins prep per evening. Prior to tests when she is revising she will up that to 40 mins x 2 per night but beyond that no.

That’s useful - thanks. Could I ask - are the two 30 minute slots related to the subject she’s revising, if you see what I mean? (I.e. said she has a science test, are they set science prep? Or does she get two other preps and then have to revise science on top?)

She has a prep timetable so 2 subjects per night on a set rota. For tests, revision happens on the night the subject is on rota but she will do an extra 10 mins.
End of year exams she doesn't follow prep timetable and will do 30 mins revision of 2-3 subjects per night.

Just to add this is a non-selective independent school so not overly academic but the prep schedule is seen as integral to the school day. Her state school friends in Yr 8 get significantly less homework.
