I’m watching SVU, and it occurred to me that I think the worst job in the world are one of two

  1. The person who has to sit and watch videos, and look at photos of children being raped, abused and molested

  2. linked to the first one, a person who has to go undercover and pretend to like doing that sort of stuff in order to bring down the perpetrators.

I could never do something like that. The images must haunt their very soul and require heavy counselling

I have a friend of a friend who is a consultant forensic psychiatrist in a secure hospital. I don't think I could ever do a job like that for lots of reasons.
I also know someone who inspects abattoirs which sounds horrible. And I recently met someone who is an naval officer on a submarine. That's not terrible in the same way, but I'm quite claustrophobic so even hearing him talking about it made me feel a bit unwell. No way could I do it,the idea absolutely terrifies me.
I'm thankful that there are people who are prepared to do these jobs that many of us find unpalatable as lots of them are really important.

@TheFormidableMrsC that's not quite right either. No regular sessions with a psychologist- at least not in Thames Valley!

However you can request sessions with a therapist you need them - and a good sergeant would be ahead of the game with that anyway

In my force that department has 2 counselling sessions a year as mandatory, more if needed.

Podiatrist/Chiropodist. 😱

A friend has been a chiropodist for 40 years, she absolutely loves her job, no intention of retiring, will gradually reduce her hours but wants to keep doing it as long as she can.
I wouldn't want to work on people's horrible feet but can think of loads of much worse jobs that would do my head in eg working on a packing production line in a factory, would bore me to death. Something like a sewage farm wouldn't bother me at all.

A friend was a police officer who worked in child sex abuse and six months was the max they were allowed to work at a time. With a break they were allowed to go back. My house was up for sale and they knew I was looking locally for another house. They called me and named a specific road I should not be buying a house on. They didn't tell me more than that and and I didn't ask but I knew exactly what they meant.

We never discussed cases but they said that any night out in a local pub or restaurant it wasn't unusual to see someone known to them.
