I want to retire

RosieLeaLovesTea · 09/02/2025 22:00

Hi all I have been working full time for 24 years and I want to retire. I am so envious of people that are retired. Am I the only one? I have to work another 10 years to get a full state pension as somewhere beefier 2016 my employer opted out. I checked my HMRC account online. m. Such a bummer. I thought I only had another 6 years to go.

Same. I'm nowhere near retirement age or financial independence, but I'm there in solidarity Grin

BrightLightTonight · 09/02/2025 22:05

I think we all would have liked to retire after 24 years - sone of us have been working fir 48 years and still can not get our state pension for another 18 months

skippy67 · 09/02/2025 22:50

I've got another 2 and a bit years before I can retire. Counting the days!

I want to retire.
I'm 20 years below state pension.
I wish someone would tell me what I need in the pot. But no one can. Grrrr

Four years and two months to go.

Not that I'm counting...

Kindnesscostsnothingtryit · 09/02/2025 23:03

I've worked solidly for 30 years and still have 20 left!!! Thankfully have saved hard into a pension throughout so hoping to retire at 60.

GenerousGardener · 09/02/2025 23:05

One year eleven months to go. Earned my full
state pension years ago. I’ll probably keep working part time though.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 09/02/2025 23:47

I don't know what you mean by having to work 10 years more years to get full state pension, but you've only worked 24 years . How old are you ?

I retired around 15 months ago after working for 40 years. I get my workplace pension but won't get state pension for another 7 years.

friendlycat · 10/02/2025 00:21

I’ve already done 44 years and still have to keep going.
How old are you?

suki1964 · 10/02/2025 00:35

I was so looking forward to a retirement age of 60 most of my life, now its 66 so 5 more years before the pension comes through

I took my very small NHS pension two years ago and used some to plug a lot of missing years ( ill health and never claimed benefits ) and I work just 20 hrs a week now - early mornings so its kind of like being retired as I have the days from 10am free.

Now Im getting closer to retirement the less I want to retire, If this wee job is still around aged 66, Ill keep going I think

Meadowfinch · 10/02/2025 01:02

I'm 61. I have 42 years NI paid so that bit is sorted. My personal pension isn't huge but I will downsize the house to free up some equity and I plan to stop work in late 2026.

I can't wait. 🤗

Angrymum22 · 10/02/2025 01:53

I retired at 59. I have paid full NI contributions for state pension but was able to take my NHS pension once I hit 55 but waited until 59. So glad I did, I still work one day a week.
To anyone starting out try and contribute as much as you can into a workplace or private pension. If the superan is taken at source you don’t look at is as earnings and you are not tempted to use it rather than save it. Then it is there when you actually need it.
I have a pension pot equivalent to 700k which has returned a very comfortable pension. But paying into a private pension and building up a pot of 200-300k then convert to a drawdown pension can give you a decent yearly income on top of your state pension.

NattyTurtle59 · 10/02/2025 02:03

I am retired, but had to work almost 50 years to get there. I think you are just going to have to suck it up and carry on.

However, I live in a country where you don't have to work at all to get a the full rate of superannuation, much more civilised 😄

LornaDuh · 10/02/2025 02:06

No! I like working. I need structure and routine. Don't want to spend all day every day pursuing hobbies with holidays here and there.

frozendaisy · 10/02/2025 02:18

@RosieLeaLovesTea
For each £100k; in your pension fund youget a yearly income of about £4k
So depends how much income you want in retirement
Depending on your employer you don't need to put in £100k to get that amount when you draw it down, which you can do from 55, going up to 57 soon.
At 66/7/8 you will get your state pension.

So you can work out how much you need to save now, depending on age, when you want to retire (say 57), allowing for growth, and how much income you want. There are pension calculators online.

RedRumRoams · 10/02/2025 02:27

I don't want to completely retire, I like work, I just want to retire from having to have a "proper" job. I could see myself working part time until I am very old (hopefully). I just don't want stress but for now, I have to.

SophieGee · 10/02/2025 02:44

Me too. Got another 21 years to go. God knows I want to break free.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 10/02/2025 02:56

Assuming you're female so your life expectancy is 80+, 24 or even 30 years of working life seems a little unbalanced.

I'm 53yo with 36 years of employment (minus maternity leave) under my belt. I'll be self-supporting in retirement as a result.

Whatanidiot123 · 10/02/2025 03:10

I've worked for 22 years, another 22 to go!

I actually quite like working. What I am looking forward to is being out of the financial pinch point we’re in now - paying down mortgage, a child still in nursery, outlay on the house. I plan to go part time soon and I’m paying loads into my private pension so that I can hopefully retire at 60 from my main job. I think I’ll work and volunteer in some form though.

Mumof1andacat · 10/02/2025 03:30

I have been looking at retirement for the last 5 years. However, I'm only 40!! As you can imagine the figures don't work. The thought of work for another 25-30 years feels me with dread.

stargirl1701 · 10/02/2025 04:02

I've got 25 years service under my belt with 20 to go. Teaching. Scotland.

NattyTurtle59 · 10/02/2025 06:01

LornaDuh · 10/02/2025 02:06

No! I like working. I need structure and routine. Don't want to spend all day every day pursuing hobbies with holidays here and there.

I used to think I would continue working once I reached retirement age - until I took voluntary redundancy, had a taste of freedom, and never went back to full time work. Now I am fully retired the days fly by, even thought I don't seem to be doing much, and I still have structure and routine, it's just far more pleasant than working. When I look back I don't miss work one bit.

whatisforteamum · 10/02/2025 08:46

Interesting thread.
I've worked 40 years...some part time when dcs were small.
Took a decision to do 60 hrs a week for 5 yrs and not spent much at all so hoping to go part time soon at 59.
I have enough saved to fill the years before state pension just need to know how many yrs I need to put into the pot.
2 yrs college.
40 working
I understand being home for 5 yrs with small dcs pays the stamp through family allowance.

bumblingbovine49 · 10/02/2025 08:49

I'm seriously ready to retire . 40 years of working for me and I probably have another 5 years at least before I can retire Sigh!
